Imagine having thousands of coins of silver and gold. With that horde of wealth you could buy so many things that could make your life more comfortable and enjoyable. But the Bible speaks of something far more precious than silver and gold. And while few of us will ever accumulate vast amounts of silver and gold, all of us who know Jesus, can own this wonderful asset. And just what is this most valuable asset – it’s knowing the Word of God – for we read in (Psalm 119:72): “The law from your mouth is more precious to me than thousands of pieces of silver and gold.”
When you know and obey God’s Word it becomes the gateway to a vast treasure chest of amazing blessings. Let’s look at two of these blessings.
Wisdom
(Proverbs 16:16) tells us: “How much better to get wisdom than gold, to get insight rather than silver!” And we read in (Proverbs 3:13-15): “Blessed are those who find wisdom, those who gain understanding, for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold. She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her.” For you see when you have godly wisdom you will obey God and walk in His ways, and as a result you will experience untold blessings, with the chief one being you will be living a life that is pleasing to God. And in my book there is no greater blessing than knowing you are pleasing to the Lord.
Joy
As a Christian we will all go through trials in this life but when we view our trials as stepping stones to having our faith built up so we can give more glory to God we will see that we can experience great joy in the process. Why not take a moment to meditate on one of the most encouraging portions of Scripture that links trials, faith, gold, and joy.
For we read in (I Peter 1:3-9):
“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.”
Not only are increased wisdom and joy the direct results of knowing and obeying God’s teachings, but I could list many other benefits such as abundant peace, a longer lifespan, a great night’s sleep, and the approval of our Lord and Savior. My friends there is just nothing more precious in this universe that to know and obey the Word of God!
