Normally when we think of a love affair we think of a charming romantic relationship between a man and a woman. In this devotion, however, I would like to talk about a different type of love affair that we read about in (Psalm 119) which concerns a man’s love affair with the Word of God.
In (Psalm 119) the author, who is unknown, repeatedly shares his deep love of God’s Word, and his strong desire to live by it. While most scholars suggest that this amazing psalm was written by David, Daniel, Ezra, or Jeremiah, we will probably never know until we get to heaven. One thing, however, is certain, that whoever penned this master psalm, his love for the Word of God shines forth so often that it is simply breathtaking.
Below are a selection of verses from (Psalm 119) that the psalmist uses to express his profound love for the Scriptures. Throughout these verses the psalmist uses a variety of words to describe the sacred Scriptures. These include: commandments, testimonies, statutes, law, judgments, precepts, and word. All of these verses from (Psalm 119) are from the King James Version. Please take time as you read them and allow each verse, like the psalmist, to become the cry of your heart!
Psalm 119 (KJV)
10 With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments.
14 I have rejoiced in the way of thy testimonies, as much as in all riches.
16 I will delight myself in thy statutes: I will not forget thy word.
18 Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.
20 My soul breaketh for the longing that it hath unto thy judgments at all times.
24 Thy testimonies also are my delight and my counselors.
34 Give me understanding, and I shall keep thy law; yea, I shall observe it with my whole heart.
35 Make me to go in the path of thy commandments; for therein do I delight.
40 Behold, I have longed after thy precepts: quicken me in thy righteousness.
48 My hands also will I lift up unto thy commandments, which I have loved; and I will meditate in thy statutes.
71 It is good for me that I have been afflicted; that I might learn thy statutes.
72 The law of thy mouth is better unto me than thousands of gold and silver.
92 Unless thy law had been my delights, I should then have perished in mine affliction.
97 O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day.
111 Thy testimonies have I taken as an heritage for ever: for they are the rejoicing of my heart.
129 Thy testimonies are wonderful: therefore doth my soul keep them.
143 Trouble and anguish have taken hold on me: yet thy commandments are my delights.
162 I rejoice at thy word, as one that findeth great spoil.
167 My soul hath kept thy testimonies; and I love them exceedingly.
