A High and Privileged Calling

Did you ever realize that as a disciple of Jesus you have a very unique three-fold calling? And to be great in the kingdom of God, it doesn’t matter what station of life you inhabit, or what talents you have, but to how faithful you are to this calling. I love how J. I. Packer refers to this special calling that all believers have: “Our high and privileged calling is to do the will of God in the power of God for the glory of God.”1

Let’s take a look at each phase of this high and privileged calling:

Are you doing the will of God?

Christians are called to always do the will of God. Whether it is to love your neighbor, to always be thankful, to praise the Lord, or to never be anxious, God’s will should always be one of the primary goals of a follower of Christ. And while doing God’s will may not always be easy, it’s always in our long term best interest to obey the commandments of the Lord. And as I shared in yesterday’s devotion, obedience to the will of God is the real pathway to abundant joy. Doing God’s will is not only our calling but it is a high privilege to know that we are playing a part in building up God’s kingdom here on earth. And what can be more exciting than that!

Are you doing the will of God in the power of God?

Next, are we relying on our own power and strength or on the power of God to carry out His will. It is so important that we walk in the power of the Holy Spirit to carry out God’s will in our lives. When we do this we will not only walk in supernatural power but we will be able to tap into God’s limitless resources to carry out His will. But if we rely on our own strength, power, and wisdom we often will fail, have to rely on our very limited resources, and sadly, even claim some of the glory for ourselves, saying look what I have done. This now brings us to the third part of our three-fold calling.

Is everything you do for the glory of God?

And this brings us to our ultimate calling and purpose in life. We, as believers in Christ, are called to do everything for the glory of God. (1 Corinthians 10:31) tells us: “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” When we desire to do God’s will, in the strength of the Holy Spirit, and for the glory of God, I believe, we are on the path to being great in the kingdom of God, no matter how big or small the task at hand is. For you see God is looking for men and women who are sold out to being faithful to using their time, talents, and treasury, all for His glory!

Far from being a dull and foolish use of our gifts and resources, as Christians, we lead the most exciting, joy filled, and rewarding life imaginable. And as ambassadors for Christ, a treasure chest of blessings await us as we do the will of God, in the power of God, for the glory of God!
