Another Great Cloud of Witnesses

(Hebrews 12:1-2) tells us: “Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” In these two verses we see that the great cloud of witnesses are the heroes of the faith from Hebrews 11. We also see that one of the great motivators that allowed Jesus to go to the cross for us was the fact that He would receive great joy from knowing that His sacrifice at Calvary would lead to our salvation. These two powerful motivators – the cloud of witnesses (both internal and external to the Bible) and joy – are things that we need to focus on to help us not only overcome sin in our lives, but to spend more time in worshipping Jesus.

Throughout many of my past devotions I have shared quotes from famous people to show us that our Bible is indeed an awesome book with a long list of powerful endorsements from famous individuals from all walks of life. Below I have complied a listing of many of these quotations to serve as another great cloud of witnesses to encourage you in your walk with the Lord. I pray that these quotations will serve to let you know that our Bible is not only a unique book but a book that can help all of us fall more in love with Jesus.

If you would like a Word document with all of these quotations and the  sources for these quotations please email me at curt717@yahoo.com and I will forward you the file. Enjoy!

“The earlier my children begin to read the Bible the more confident will be my hope that they will prove useful citizens of their country and respectable members of our society.”  – John Quincy Adams

“A thousand times over, the death knell of the Bible has been sounded, the funeral procession formed, the inscription cut on the tombstone, and committal read. But somehow the corpse never stays put. No other book has been so chopped, knifed, sifted, scrutinized, and vilified. What book on philosophy or religion or psychology … of classical or modern times has been subject to such a mass attack as the Bible? With such venom and skepticism? With such thoroughness and erudition? Upon every chapter, line and tenet? The Bible is still loved by millions, read by millions, and studied by millions.”  – Bernard Ramm

“It is impossible to rightly govern the world without God and the Bible.”  – George Washington

“I believe the Bible is the best gift God has ever given to man. All the good from the Savior of the world is communicated to us through this book.”  – Abraham Lincoln

“God suffers in the multitude of souls whom His word cannot reach. Religious truth is imprisoned in a small number of manuscript books, which confine instead of spread the public treasure. Let us break the seal which seals up holy things and give wings to Truth in order that she may win every soul that comes into the world by her word no longer written at great expense by hands easily palsied, but multiplied like the wind by an untiring machine.”  – Johann Guttenberg

“Yes, it is a press, certainly, but a press from which shall flow in inexhaustible streams, the most abundant and most marvelous liquor that has ever flowed to relieve the thirst of men! Through it, God will spread His Word. A spring of truth shall flow from it: like a new star it shall scatter the darkness of ignorance, and cause a light heretofore unknown to shine amongst men.”  – Johann Guttenberg

“From the Apostolic Fathers dating from 95 A.D. to the modern times is one great literary river inspired by the Bible — Bible dictionaries, Bible encyclopedias, Bible lexicons, Bible atlases, and Bible geographies. These may be taken as a starter. Then at random, we may mention the vast bibliographies around theology, religious education, hymnology, missions, the biblical languages, church history, religious biography, devotional works, commentaries, philosophies of religion, evidences, apologetics, and on and on. There seems to be an endless number.”  – Bernard Ramm

“This Jesus of Nazareth, without money and arms, conquered more millions than Alexander, Caesar, Mohammed, and Napoleon: without science and learning. He shed more light on things human and divine than all scholars and philosophers combined: without the eloquence of schools. He spoke such words of life as were never spoken before or since, and produced effects which lie beyond the reach of orator or poet; without writing a single line. He set more pens in motion, and furnished themes for more sermons, orations, discussions, learned volumes, works of art, and songs of praise than the whole army of great men of ancient and modern times.”  – Philip Schaff

“We must not build on the sands of an uncertain and ever changing science…but upon the rock of inspired Scriptures.”  – John A. Fleming

“The more I study nature, the more I stand amazed at the work of the Creator. Science brings men nearer to God.”  – Louis Pasteur

“The universe has been wrought for us by a supremely good and orderly Creator.”  – Nicolaus Copernicus

“I believe that the more thoroughly science is studied, the further does it take us from anything comparable to atheism.” – Lord Kelvin
