(Psalm 14:1) is perhaps the most foolish belief system I ever held to as a young person in my twenties. This verse simply says: “The fool has said in his heart, ‘There is no God…’” As a former atheist, when I look back on this dark time in my life, I was a staunch believer in Darwinian evolution. But little did I realize on my quest to find meaning in life, devoid of a god, that I would find God through my examining the evidence for and against creation. Now as a Christian, for 43+ years, looking back, I am amazed that I was so foolish to embrace a universe that I thought came into existence through blind random chance.
Below, I would like to share three quotes that express various areas of foolishness, and how we can become wise by embracing a biblical perspective on life.
Adrian Rogers once said: “Foolish people spend time and money poring over horoscopes and consulting so-called psychics trying to see the dark unknown. How much better to walk through life holding the hand of One who knows the way and cares for us!”1
On my journey to find meaning in life, I tried all kinds of different belief systems. I read several books on, and went to a weekly group that was into Eastern mysticism. I practiced and went to classes on transcendental meditation. I explored Silva mind control. I even went to a Buddhist Monastery in New York City. But, thankfully, one day back in 1981, a friend of mine challenged me to read the New Testament. I read it in a week and, praise God, six months later I gave my heart to Jesus. Not only did meaning suddenly flood into my heart and soul, but as Adrian Rogers shared, I no longer had to journey into the dark unknown, because I found that there is a God named Jesus, “who knows the way and cares for us!”
Thomas Watson astutely said: “What fools are they who, for a drop of pleasure, drink a sea of wrath.”2
While sin can definitely be pleasurable, it sadly, draws us farther away from the one true God – Jesus Christ. As I read the New Testament, I quickly saw that it was my sin that separated me from Jesus, and that as I continued to live in sin I was storing up for myself “a sea of wrath.” But praise God, one day, on October 12, 1981, the Holy Spirit opened my blind eyes and hardened heart, and not only did I realize that I was a sinner, but that my only way to enter into a relationship with God was through the Savior – Jesus Christ. That day I invited Jesus into my heart and made the wisest decision I could ever make. No longer did I have to fear the wrath of God, but now as a child of God, I can look forward to an eternity with the Lord, in perfect joy and bliss.
Jeremy Taylor shared the following insight that was key to unlocking the stronghold that Darwinian evolution held me back from accepting that God existed: “What can be more foolish than to think that all this rare fabric of heaven and earth could come by chance, when all the skill of art is not able to make an oyster!”3
Simply put, one day I came to realize that our universe is too complex to come about by chance and that its creation screams for a Creator. Since every painting has a painter, and every watch has a watchmaker, it is the height of foolishness to not believe that every universe has a universe maker – whose name is God.
In closing, if you want wisdom, then may I suggest you read the manual of ultimate wisdom – the Holy Bible. The Bible contains everything we need to live a productive and God honoring life. And this my friends will prove to be the wisest investment you could ever make with your time, talents, and treasury!
