In today’s part II of this devotion, we will look at the rest of this wonderful song.
Verse 2
You’re my friend
We can have many different friends but only one best friend. And when you really get to know Jesus Christ as your friend He will quickly become your best friend. He is so kind, loving, merciful, and gentle that his attraction becomes the sweetest thing we can ever experience.
And You are my brother
He is also our brother in the sense that He’s a friend that the Bible says sticks closer than a brother.
Even though You are a king
But what is truly amazing is that this friend and brother is also really a king – the king of the universe! Thus, we have friendship with the ruler of the universe. Can you imagine being friends with President Biden? That would really be something. But you have a friend so much more important and exalted – Jesus Christ – the King of Kings and Lord of Lords!
I love You more than any other
When we reflect on what Jesus did for us we can only stand in awe of the myriad of blessings He showers us with. He took away our sins, gave us peace, joy and meaning, promises us a mansion in heaven, and to love and cherish us throughout all eternity. With all of these blessings how can we not love Him more than any other.
So much more than anything
Amen!
Verse 3
I want You more than gold or silver
Picture the New York Federal Reserve Building. Ninety feet below, on solid bedrock, is the largest supply of gold in the free world. The song writer says that I want you more than gold or silver. Can you imagine that it is better to want God more than all the gold and silver in the world! The reason is simple – gold is just a hard rock of metal and it can’t really satisfy.
Only You can satisfy
Only Jesus Christ can satisfy the deep longing of the human soul.
You alone are the real joy giver
The real joy giver is the one who creates joy in the hearts of the human soul and that is Jesus Christ. Joy is a by-product of knowing Jesus and nothing short of this can bring true joy to an individual.
And the apple of my eye
God calls us the apple of His eye, so it is only fitting that we reciprocate and tell God that He is the apple of our eye.
Refrain
You alone are my strength, my shield
God is our refuge and strength and mighty shield. He guides, protects, and comforts us.
To You alone may my spirit yield
After realizing who God is and what He does for us isn’t it only wise and logical that we yield our whole being to Him.
You alone are my heart’s desire
All we really need is to just get a glimpse of who Jesus is, and He alone should be our heart’s desire.
And I long to worship Thee
And as a result every fiber within us should long to worship Him!
