“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you…”

According to the Bible and modern science at the moment of conception the foreknowledge of God becomes the reality of life. In one of the most amazing verses in the Bible we see how early on God tells us about the future of one of His greatest servants – the prophet Jeremiah. For we read: “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.” (Jeremiah 1:5). Even before conception God knew about Jeremiah, but it wouldn’t be until conception that Jeremiah’s physical form would take place.

We see this concept of God’s foreknowledge even in the case of our Lord Jesus when we read: “And the angel said to her, ‘Do not be afraid, Mary; for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb, and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus.’” (Luke 1:30-31).

And again, we see this amazing ability for God to know all about us before we are born, vividly described by David in (Psalm 139:15-16): “My frame was not hidden from Thee, when I was made in secret, and skillfully wrought in the depths of the earth. Thine eyes have seen my unformed substance; and in Thy Book they were all written, the days that were ordained for me, when as yet there was not one of them.”

Since it is so clear that God knows all about us and has great plans for us before we are even conceived one might ask why doesn’t God come out and condemn abortion in outright terms. Perhaps the following statement by Sean McDowell will help us all realize that there was really no need for the Bible to spell it out: “The main reason Scripture does not directly address the issue of abortion is that abortion was so unimaginable to an Israelite woman it was not even necessary to mention it in the legal code. For one thing, children were considered a blessing from God (Ps. 127:3). Second, God is the sovereign ruler over conception in the womb (Gen. 29:33; 1 Sam. 1:19–20). And third, it was viewed as a curse to remain childless (Deut. 25:6). The Bible is silent about abortion because it was unthinkable in the Hebrew mind.”1

What really disturbs me is not that there are worldly people who are OK with abortion, since they are clearly blinded by the enemy, but that there are Christians and Jews today who say they have a deep love for God but yet see no problem in destroying innocent life. For these Christians and Jews their blindness is without excuse and I believe God will hold them accountable for their stance.

As Christians our main avenue of defense for the unborn, I believe, is to pray for the hearts of the women contemplating abortion that they would see that the lives they are carrying in their womb are of incredible value and that abortion is never the right answer. Prayer is powerful and so often we don’t use it.

I like what Norman Geisler once said concerning abortion: “Ronald Reagan once quipped, “I’ve noticed all those in favor of abortion are already born.” Indeed, all pro-abortionists would become pro-life immediately if they found themselves back in the womb.”2

So, let’s commit to pray for the unborn. Their lives are in the balance!

  1. “Why doesn’t God come out and condemn abortion in outright terms?” the devotion asks.
Actually, He does. His condemnation of abortion is included in the 6th Commandment, “You shall not murder.”
Additionally, the majority of abortions are committed by women who have violated the 7th Commandment, “You shall not commit adultery.“
As Francis Schaeffer said, “He is there and He is not silent.”
Often, the decision to murder a baby in the womb is based on a lie (although, nowadays the abortion industry is pushing for killing the child immediately after birth if the so called Mother can’t handle raising a child due to anxiety or stress). What is the most popular slogan of the protester? “My body, my choice!” Have you ever considered the science behind that statement? The pregnant Mother does not have 2 heads, 4 hands, 4 legs, 2 hearts, or 2 DNA types. In other words, the baby is not her body and an abortion is not the same as having a tumor removed.
With all the ranting about following the science lately, I would encourage the Mother, contemplating murdering her unborn child, to not only follow the science but obey the Word of God written on her heart.
