The Bible has long been viewed by the world as a crutch Christians lean on in times of trouble. We, many times have been forced into taking a defensive position in defending our faith in God’s precious Word. The time has come to dispel these falsehoods and use the Bible as the offensive tool God designed it to be. (Ephesians 6:17) tells us: “And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”
As Christians we are often made to feel as if the Bible needs to be defended when it comes under attack. Let me assure you that the Bible doesn’t need our defending since God is quite capable of defending Himself and His word. Men have tried everything to destroy this incredible book over the last two thousand years but to no avail. It is still the best selling book in the world and the most cherished.
What I believe our role as Christians should be is to use the world’s own standards of logic to show them just how magnificently logical a belief in the Bible is and just how illogical and inconsistent the world’s way of viewing things are.
As we present the sheer logic of the Bible to the unsaved we can then sit back and allow the Holy Spirit to do the defending and more importantly the convicting.
The Bible – One Special Autobiography
It is a sad fact that many Catholics and nominal Christians in America never read the Bible. In fact, the only time they read it or at least listen to it is when they attend their Sunday morning worship service. What is even sadder is that many so-called evangelical Christians rarely read their Bibles.
It is important that we present these Catholics and nominal Christians with the inconsistency they are living by not reading the Bible. Let take Catholics for example. If you were to ask them if they love Jesus and if He is the Son of God most would say yes. And if you were to further ask them if they believe they are children of their heavenly Father above, again most would say yes.
The important point to now show them, and we need to ask God for wisdom to do this in a very loving way, is that their perspective of how they view the Bible is way off center.
Let’s have them consider the following train of thought: Say your own father were to present you with a book which he said he spent a large portion of the last three years writing, and that it was his very own autobiography, what would your response be? I dare say that you, as their very own child, would want to read that book just about as much as any book in the whole world.
But just what is the Bible? It is in reality an autobiography by God (yes men wrote it but under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit who is the true author)
that took approximately 1,500 years to finish. And since you believe you are a child of your heavenly Father, how much more should you desire to read and study this autobiography! The parallel is quite dynamic and the logic inescapable.
In tomorrow’s Part II of this devotion we will explore two more examples of logic that you can loving share with those who say they love Jesus but rarely read the Bible.
