Circumstances – Bumps in the Road or Steppingstones to Greatness

Eric Liddell, when referring to circumstances, once said: “Circumstances may appear to wreck our lives and God’s plans, but God is not helpless among ruins. Our broken lives are not lost or useless. God’s love is still working. He comes in and takes the calamity and uses it victoriously, working out his plan of love.”1

My friends when things seem to be spiraling out of control rest assured that God is always in control. Not only that but (Romans 8:28) tells us: “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God…” Our Lord has infinite resources to transform what seems to be a bump in the road into a steppingstone to greatness.

I pray that the following quotes may help you realize that God is the master of all the issues of life, and that if we let Him, He will use, even the direst of circumstances, to bless you and use you to bring glory to His name.2

“God has a purpose behind every problem. He uses circumstances to develop our character. In fact, he depends more on circumstances to make us like Jesus than he depends on our reading the Bible.” – Rick Warren

“Adversity is not simply a tool. It is God’s most effective tool for the advancement of our spiritual lives. The circumstances and events that we see as setbacks are oftentimes the very things that launch us into periods of intense spiritual growth. Once we begin to understand this, and accept it as a spiritual fact of life, adversity becomes easier to bear.” – Charles Stanley

“What happens outwardly in your life is not as important as what happens inside you. Your circumstances are temporary, but your character will last forever.” – Rick Warren

“We will stand amazed to see the topside of the tapestry and how God beautifully embroidered each circumstance into a pattern for our good and His glory.” – Joni Eareckson Tada

“Faith is believing God anyway in the face of what seem like unbelievable circumstances.” – Patrick Morley

“If we cannot believe God when circumstances seem be against us, we do not believe Him at all.” – Charles Spurgeon

“No matter what our circumstance, we can find a reason to be thankful.” – David Jeremiah

“Integrity is keeping a commitment even after circumstances have changed.” – David Jeremiah

“Temptation always starts in your mind, not in circumstances.” – Rick Warren

“The Bible is full of God’s promises to provide for us spiritually and materially, to never forsake us, to give us peace in times of difficult circumstances, to cause all circumstances to work together for our good, and finally to bring us safely home to glory. Not one of those promises is dependent upon our performance. They are all dependent on the grace of God given to us through Jesus Christ.” – Jerry Bridges

“Circumstances which we have resented, situations which we have found desperately difficult, have all been the means in the hands of God of driving the nails into the self-life which so easily complains.” – Alan Redpath

“God is more concerned with conforming me to the likeness of His Son than leaving me in my comfort zones. God is more interested in inward qualities than outward circumstances – things like refining my faith, humbling my heart, cleaning up my thought life and strengthening my character.” – Joni Eareckson Tada

“We should inquire once again as to what the life of faith is. It is one lived by believing God under any circumstance: ‘If he slay me,’ says Job, ‘yet would I trust in Him’ (Job 13:15 Darby). That is faith.” – Watchman Nee

“This world is so full of care and sorrow that it is a gracious debt we owe to one another to discover the bright crystals of delight hidden in somber circumstances and irksome tasks.” – Helen Keller

“God uses his Word, people and circumstances to mold us. All three are indispensable for character development. God’s word provides the truth we need to grow, God’s people provide the support we need to grow, and circumstances provide the environment we need to grow.” – Rick Warren

“God’s grace is not given to make us feel better, but to glorify Him… Good feelings may come, or they may not, but that is not the issue. The issue is whether or not we honor God by the way we respond to our circumstances.” – Jerry Bridges

“Often times God demonstrates His faithfulness in adversity by providing for us what we need to survive. He does not change our painful circumstances. He sustains us through them.” – Charles Stanley

“God is more interested in the success of our character than the success of our circumstances.” – Patrick Morley

“The world changes – circumstances change, we change – but God’s Word never changes.” – Warren Wiersbe

“We have little control over the circumstances of life. We can’t control the weather or the economy, and we can’t control what other people say about or do to us. There is only one area where we have control–we can rule the kingdom inside. The heart of every problem is the problem in the heart.” – Warren Wiersbe
