As one reads (Psalm 119) it is hard not to see that the psalmist has a love affair with the commandments of the Lord. In fact, nine times the psalmist says that he delights in the words of Scripture. While he uses different words to describe Scripture, as you can see from the nine verses below, I love the word commandments the best because it denotes the theme of obedience. And what could be more delightful than to obey a God who loves us so much that He sent His own son, Jesus, to die for us so that we could live.
When we fully grasp that not only is the Christian life a sheer joy, but we get eternal life thrown in as part of the package, it’s not hard to see why the psalmist uses the phrase delight so much. I don’t know about you but I too delight in the commandments of the Lord because obeying Jesus brings great joy to my heart and peace to my soul. Knowing that by obeying the commandments of God, I put a smile on God’s face and bring Him glory gives me great delight because isn’t this the chief purpose in life – to glorify God and enjoy Him forever!
Why not take a few minutes to meditate on the following nine verses and get lost in the delight of obeying the commandments of the Lord.
(Psalm 119:16)
I will delight myself in Your statutes; I will not forget Your word.
(Psalm 119:24)
Your testimonies also are my delight And my counselors.
