America today stands at the crossroads of her very existence. While she spends hundreds of billions annually on national defense, her number-one enemy is poised to launch a strike force of immense destruction. This enemy of impending disaster is herself. The stage is now set for self-annihilation as America braces herself to enter an era of Disintegration.
Era Of Disintegration
During the last fifty years, the very fabric of this great country of our has been itself stretched, torn and mangled to the point where it is literally hanging together by a few threads. What we see today in our country is a severely fractured and dysfunctional society. In a land where such great prosperity exists, despair is spreading like a cancer, as unchecked epidemics run rampant throughout every sector of our population.
In our nation today the following is a partial listing of dysfunctional behaviors and lifestyles:
DYSFUNCTIONAL BEHAVIOR/LIFESTYLE
Emotionally and mentally ill
Alcoholics
Homosexuals
Child abuse victims
Domestic violence (battered wives)
Abortions
Compulsive gamblers
Drug addicts
Divorces
Unwed mothers
Runaway children
Attempted suicides
Homeless
Incest victims
The real sad thing about this list is that it is incomplete and the sheer number of people falling into most of its classes continues to climb.
There is a great war going on in the U.S.A. today. These invaders are not from outside our nation, nor even from inside, as in the case of a civil war. But the war that is being waged lies within each individual. Our minds are being bombarded by thought bombs of megaton proportions. How much longer can we endure these attacks on our consciences, only time will tell.
Is There Any Hope?
The gloomy picture we have just painted somehow has fallen far short of the great American Dream scenario we all thought was our birthright. How can a country with such great prosperity be in such a dismal state of affairs? Many years ago, I began to ask myself this very question. In hopes of finding an answer to this great state of despair, the question of why we are here in the first place, if it is only to experience such a short-lived, mediocre existence, kept pounding away at my brain. Such thoughts began to flood my mind:
Have you ever wondered why you are here in this moment of time and space? Or perhaps one clear night, as you gaze into a brilliant, star-filled evening sky, your mind begins to ponder just how you came into existence. But most of all, in a quiet moment, when you are all alone, the question “Where are you going in this world?” inevitably becomes a resounding gong on the corridors of your mind. Yes, “why,” “how” and “where” are the words that we begin to focus upon whenever we stop for a moment and turn our thoughts toward the realm of the infinite.
As I sit here and allow my thoughts to wander, I cannot help but feel an utter insignificance to life without knowing why I am here. Man, that crowning glory of all our world, since he first began to formulate ideas and concepts, and experience feelings, has asked the question “Why?”
Why am I here? Throughout man’s existence, through each heartbeat, breath and step he has taken, the question of why has never ceased to leave his mind. Without the answer to this most fundamental question, life will never have meaning, man will never find true happiness, and our journey through time will be one filled with despair, bleakness and a feeling of emptiness. Just examine your heart, for no secrets can ever be hidden from it.
Just when I thought I would never find the answer to all of my who, what, where and why questions and the reason for the despair I saw all around me, the answer came. Both the cause and the cure became abundantly clear to me, as I allowed Jesus and the Bible to become part of my life.
In tomorrow’s devotion we will explore why the Bible is the ultimate answer book for today’s troubled world.
The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why. –Mark Twain
“Without the answer to this most fundamental question, life will never have meaning.”
