Memorizing Scripture should be something every Christian makes a priority in their lives. It is such a joy to call to mind the words of the sacred word in times of need and to just delight the soul. Below are five precious verses that every Christian should know by heart. Following each of these five special verses I will share a little of why I believe they are so awesome.
(Deuteronomy 14:2)
“for you are a people holy to the Lord your God. Out of all the peoples on the face of the earth, the Lord has chosen you to be his treasured possession.”
So many Christians still struggle with inferiority complexes today because, I believe, they don’t really know who they are in Christ. One of the greatest studies you can ever undertake in the Bible is to see who you are in Christ. Among other things the Holy Scriptures tell us that we are created in the image of God, are children of God, are the apple of His eye, are a royal priesthood, a chosen people, a joint-heir with Christ, and in our verse from Deuteronomy His “treasured possession.” We are next to the Trinity the hottest things in the universe to the Lord. The next time you are feeling down or not worth much remember that you are a treasured possession to Jesus. And what do you do if you have a treasured possession – you cherish it! And my friends Jesus cherishes you very much.
(Psalm 119:72)
“The law from your mouth is more precious to me than thousands of pieces of silver and gold.”
In Psalm 119 the psalmist uses many different words to refer to the Word of God – the Bible. For example, some of the words used are His commandments, precepts, statutes, testimonies, ordinances, word(s), and in our verse above law. What the psalmist here is saying is that the Bible is more precious to him than much gold and silver. Gold and silver are great to have because they can get you “things,” but the Bible is far greater because it can give you wisdom, peace, joy, and eternal life. I for one like “things” but they can’t compare with the true riches that come from the Holy Bible.
(Isaiah 41:10)
“Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, Surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.”
This verse is what I like to refer to as the 5 “I’s” verse. Notice we read that God says:
I am with you
I am your God
I will strengthen you
I will help you
I will uphold you
God loves you so much that He always has your back. When God says I am with you and I am your God that speaks about relationship. Remember God is our heavenly Father and He will never leave you or forsake you. And when God says He will strengthen, help, and uphold you that speaks of His supplying everything we need to experience a rich and rewarding life here on earth. Let’s face it God is crazy about you!
(Romans 8:18)
“For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us.”
Let’s face it while the Christian life is the best life possible it isn’t always the easiest to live. It requires obedience to the Lord, sacrifice daily, and in many instances suffering; both for standing up for Christ, and for the fact we live in a broken and sin-filled world. Statistics tell us that in the year 2020 thousands of Christians have been martyred for their faith in Christ and millions more have suffered intense persecution for their stand for Christ. Another type of suffering that believers go through is because our world is broken and as a result we can suffer from diseases, accidents, natural disasters, and a host of other negative circumstances. But whatever the suffering we may go through it can’t compare with the glory we will experience when we get our glorified bodies and are able to spend eternity with Christ in heaven. (II Corinthians 4:17) says it so beautifully: “For our momentary, light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison.”
(Proverbs 16:6)
“In mercy and truth atonement is provided for iniquity; And by the fear of the LORD, one departs from evil.”
This gem of a verse should be memorized by every Christian because it contains the greatest secret, I believe, in all of Scripture for overcoming sin. The concept here is not to be afraid of God but to have a holy reverential awe of Him. The more we reverence God and hallow His name the more we will want to do everything in our power to glorify Him. On the positive side this means to always praise Him for His mighty deeds and on the negative side to not sin. As we read the Bible more and spend time in the presence of Jesus we can’t help but fall more in love with Him. And the more we love Jesus and magnify His name the more we will live a holy life and not want to sin because we love Jesus too much to displease Him. So, let’s cultivate a holy awe for God by just spending time realizing that He is the sovereign Lord of the universe and yet He calls us His “treasured possession.”
