George

Today marks the beginning of the second year of my website. I thought it would be fun for the next week (7 days) to re-post 7 of my favorite devotionals. For those of you who have been following me since the beginning as well as to those who may be fairly new to my blog I would love to hear from you as to any comments you might have or any topics you might want to see in future posts. Please drop me a line at my email: curt717@yahoo.com

Back in the early 1990’s I was having lunch with four vice presidents, who happened to be co-workers of mine, at JP Morgan Chase Bank; where I worked in the finance field for 26 years. I can’t remember how we got on the topic but I began to share with these four men how I could prove that God must exist. And for the next ten minutes I began to share with these men the following argument for the existence of God.

Pointing to one of my friends, whose name was George, I began to paint a vivid picture from the world of biology to prove my case. I started to share that my friend George’s body consisted of over 100 trillion cells and yet at conception there was only one single George cell – his fertilized egg cell. Clearly all 100 trillion of these cells had to originate with George’s first egg cell since that was all George started life with. But I then began to drill deeper into cellular biology. I told my captive audience that deep within that first George cell was a tiny nucleus that contained 46 chromosomes. And deep within these chromosomes we find the basic information building blocks of life – DNA.

Clearly I told my four friends that George’s original DNA molecules by definition must have contained all the information needed and the ability to create our adult friend George. All of the tiny DNA molecules resided in that single, original George cell preprogrammed as it were to create George. This one original George cell, somehow, knew when and how to divide to form two cell, then four, and then clusters of others. These daughter George cells then knew when to begin to form tissue and muscle fibers. These multiplied George cells then knew when and how to form his then tiny heart, brain, and all of his other organs. It knew, that one original George cell, how to exchange matter and energy in such intricate ways as to form entire systems within his then tiny frame. His digestive, circulatory, urinary, and respiratory systems were completed in record time, until nine months later out came George.

This incredibly complicated and magnificently orchestrated process was again somehow preprogrammed deep within the mysterious chambers of George’s DNA molecules. As my four friends intently listened I began to go even deeper into this marvelous mystery called life.

You see, I told them, that all the knowledge that was going to become the 100 trillion cell adult we know as George had to reside in that one original George cell. I then asked them to consider the following scenario:

We all agreed that after George’s original cell was conceived that the only thing that came into its sphere of influence was the nutrients from George’s mother. But here is where the magic really takes place for you see that original George cell had to know that at a future point in time certain unknown substances, i.e., the nutrients from George’s mother, would have to be broken down and reformatted into useful tiny substances that could generate the cell multiplication process. Not only that, but the DNA in George’s cells had to have an incredible storehouse of complex bio-chemical knowledge to orchestrate this entire process.

I then made the following statement to my four friends: The only way that original single George cell could be coded with the instructions to perform these incredibly complicated processes on certain unknown future substances is if that cell had foreknowledge. And the only way it could have this foreknowledge is if there is a God who placed it there. And you know what these four vice presidents did – they changed the subject!

  1. That’s called “suppressing the truth in unrighteousness.”
Why do they change the subject? The debate over creation vs evolution is not only about the evidence. It can’t be since the evidence is the same for the evolutionist and the creationist. Biologists, anthropologists, chemists, and philosophers from both positional sides are looking at the same evidence, but they come to different conclusions. What makes the difference? A prior commitment to a set of presuppositions.
Oftentimes it’s difficult to convince people that science is not the objective field of study it’s made out to be. Even when the facts don’t make sense, the unproven prior commitment to materialism must be embraced at all costs no matter what the facts might say. To loosen the grip just a little means that God must be considered as the prime factor in the equation, and this will never do for the materialist even if it means being irrational and unscientific to protect a worldview that needs God to account for the logic that is used to keep Him out.
When pushed to be consistent with the operating assumptions of their worldview, naturalists soon learn that matter-only presuppositions don’t work and lead to nihilism. Someone who is so foolish as to operate in his intellectual life as though there were no God (Ps. 14:1) thereby ‘despises wisdom and instruction’ and ‘hates knowledge’ (Prov. 1:7, 29). He needs to be answered according to his folly—demonstrating where his philosophical principles lead—‘lest he be wise in his own eyes’ (Prov. 26:5).
A quote from a previous devotion says it best.
“Men do not reject the Bible because it contradicts itself, but because it contradicts them.”
