George Müller: Man of Faith – Man of Prayer

In George Müller’s early life, he was far from a Christian. In fact, on the contrary, he was a thief, a liar and a gambler. But by the time he died at age 92, Müller (1805 – 1898) became one of the greatest men of faith and prayer that the world has ever known. His conversion to Christianity didn’t happen overnight but when Jesus finally got ahold of him Müller became one of the greatest examples of a transformed life I know of.

Müller today is best remembered as the founder of Christian orphanages in Bristol, England during the 1800’s and for his complete trust in God’s provision for the orphans under his care. And instead of soliciting funds for his orphanages from the community and government he relied solely on prayer to supply their needs. In his later years Müller traveled the world preaching the gospel and testifying how prayer was the key to having God supply his orphanage’s every need.

Below are some of Müller’s wonderful quotations on faith, prayer, and the bible.1 I challenge you to read them slowly and meditatively and watch how they encourage your walk with the Lord.

“Faith does not operate in the realm of the possible. There is no glory for God in that which is humanly possible. Faith begins where man’s power ends.”

“The beginning of anxiety is the end of faith, and the beginning of true faith is the end of anxiety.”

“We should not shrink from opportunities where our faith may be tried. The more I am in a position to be tried in faith, the more I will have the opportunity of seeing God’s help and deliverance. Every fresh instance in which He helps and delivers me will increase my faith. The believer should not shrink from situations, positions, or circumstances in which his faith may be tried, but he should cheerfully embrace them as opportunities to see the hand of God stretched out in help and deliverance. Thus, his faith will be strengthened.”

“The only way to learn strong faith is to endure great trials.”

“Never give up praying until the answer comes.”

“It is not enough to begin to pray, nor to pray aright; nor is it enough to continue for a time to pray; but we must patiently, believingly, continue in prayer until we obtain an answer; and further we have not only to continue in prayer unto the end, but we have also to believe that God does hear us, and will answer our prayers. Most frequently we fail in not continuing in prayer until the blessing is obtained, and in not expecting the blessing.”

“Intimate knowledge of God is possible if we habitually search His Holy Scriptures & translate what we find into obedience.”

“Our heavenly Father never takes anything from his children unless he means to give them something better.”

“Only a life of prayer and meditation will render a vessel ready for the Master’s use.”

“The word of God is our only standard, and the Holy Spirit our only teacher.”

“Trials, obstacles, difficulties and sometimes defeats, are the very food of faith.”

“The vigor of our spiritual life will be in exact proportion to the place held by the Bible in our life and thoughts.”

“The first great and primary business to which I ought to attend every day is to have my soul happy in the Lord.”

“Every instance of obedience, from right motives, strengthens us spiritually, whilst every act of disobedience weakens us.”

“On the ground of our own goodness we cannot expect to have our prayers answered. But Jesus is worthy, and for His sake we may have our prayers answered. There is nothing too choice, too costly, or too great for God to give Him. He is worthy. He is the spotless, holy Child, who under all circumstances acted according to the mind of God. And if we trust in Him, if we hide in Him, if we put Him forward and ourselves in the background, depend on Him and plead His name, we may expect to have our prayers answered.”

“It often astonishes me that I did not see the importance of meditation upon Scripture earlier in my Christian life. As the outward man is not fit for work for any length of time unless he eats, so it is with the inner man. What is the food for the inner man? Not prayer, but the Word of God -not the simple reading of the Word of God, so that it only passes through our minds, just as water runs through a pipe. No, we must consider what we read, ponder over it, and apply it to our hearts.”

“God is the author of the Bible, and only the truth it contains will lead people to true happiness.”

“Often the work of the Lord itself may be a temptation to keep us from that communion with Him which is so essential to the benefit of our own souls.”
