God’s Book

In Psalm 139 David pens one of the most fascinating description in the entire Bible showing us just how God created you and me.

(Psalm 139:13-18) tells the wonderful story of how God’s foreknowledge, love, and omnipotence combine to form His most amazing creatures – mankind! I challenge you to read this portion of Scripture below and see if it doesn’t leave you awestruck and excited that our heavenly Father has created a masterpiece called You!

13 For you created my inmost being;
    you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
    your works are wonderful,
    I know that full well.
15 My frame was not hidden from you
    when I was made in the secret place,
    when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
16 Your eyes saw my unformed body;
    all the days ordained for me were written in your book
    before one of them came to be.
17 How precious to me are your thoughts, God!
    How vast is the sum of them!
18 Were I to count them,
    they would outnumber the grains of sand—
    when I awake, I am still with you.

As I read and re-read these verses many things came to mind. Three things in particular stand out:

These verses leave no room to justify abortion

Phrases such as “you knit me together in my mother’s womb,” “when I was made in the secret place,” and “when I was woven together in the depths of the earth” clearly show us God carefully creating a special and unique human being. To abort this “unseen” embryo and then fetus, is clearly tampering with God’s most precious creative act of life. To abort at any stage of God’s creative act, is to destroy one of God’s amazing creations – a human being! And since God creates life and takes life, we have no business in short-circuiting this process.

God has a special book

Verse 16 shares several amazing thoughts:

“Your eyes saw my unformed body;
all the days ordained for me were written in your book
before one of them came to be.”

Since God exists outside of time He knew all about us before time began from eternity past. Don’t try to comprehend this idea because we, with finite minds, are not capable of understanding this thought fully. I believe that at conception, when a sperm and egg cell unite that the foreknowledge of God becomes the reality of life. But to God you existed in His mind before our universe was even formed! In fact God maintains a special book on each one of us where He writes down every day of our lives before they came to be. If we could only take a look at the pages of this book how amazing a story they would tell. And while this book is special, God has an even more wonderful book called the Book of Life. This Book of Life, which is referred to seven times in the Book of Revelation, is the one book you want to make sure your name is written in. For only those people whose name is written in this book will have eternal life. All others will have to spend eternity in Hell!

God has a myriad of precious thoughts toward us

Just how many precious thoughts does our heavenly Father have toward us can be seen in verse 18: “Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand…” I used to think that this was hyperbole, but then I started to understand that, I believe, it is both hyperbole and actual. Let me explain. While the grains of sand on earth are in the many trillions, God is overseeing and giving life to each one of our 30 trillion cells. Not only that but God is taking care of the many different specialized parts within each of our cells, as well as overseeing the hundreds of interactions and processes that are going on within our 30 trillion cell network. So you see God is concerned with even our cellular components and in effect gives life and maintains the health of each tiny part within our bodies, which number in the multiple trillions!

Not only are we “fearfully and wonderfully made,” but we are made in His image. And if we know Jesus as our Savior, we will spend eternity in the presence of the Lord and that my friends is the most precious thought of all!
