God’s Calling

Did you know if you are a Christian that God has a very special calling on your life. No matter how young or old you are and no matter your occupation or your education level, Jesus wants to use you greatly to advance His kingdom and bring Him glory.

Paul David Tripp shares a wonderful thought on God’s calling on your life:  “You are called to be a public and influential ambassador of a glorious King, but you must resist the desire to be a king. You are called to trumpet God’s glory, but you must never take that glory for yourself. You are called to a position of leadership, influence, and prominence, but, in that position you are called to ‘humble yourself under the mighty hand of God.’”1

Imagine being an ambassador of the Creator of the universe, a herald tasked with trumpeting to the whole world God’s majestic glory, and being an influential leader, disseminating the best news ever – the gospel of Jesus Christ! Christian, I bet you’ve never thought of yourself in those terms, but that’s who you are. While possessing these noble roles brings with them great privilege they also bring great responsibility.

On the privilege side consider the following: There clearly can be no higher calling than to personally represent Jesus Christ to the world. After all He created the universe and has made you His personal ambassador to all those you come in contact with. Then consider the following: If you were a doctor that had the cure for cancer you would be one of the most sought after people alive. Yet you have even a bigger cure to share with the world – the cure for sin and eternal separation from God – The gospel message of salvation through Jesus Christ. You are in a sense helping to dispense the greatest cure, and the only cure, that can bring eternal life to those who partake of it – what a privilege indeed. And one final privilege: You, by virtue of your Christian testimony can glorify Jesus to a world that desperately needs to see just how wonderful a God we serve.

But on the responsibility side consider these thoughts: As an ambassador for Christ how you represent Jesus to the world can mean the difference in drawing people to the Savior or pushing them away from our Lord. As a result we must do our very best to be exemplary examples to the world around us. Even as Christians we can either unknowingly or knowingly try to steal some of the glory for ourselves instead of showering it all on Jesus. As a result we must be extremely careful to give the Lord all the glory and not take some of it for ourselves – and this my friends goes so counter to our flesh. And finally, as a believer in Christ, we must become and stay humble so as to reflect one of the main attributes of Jesus to a world looking for authenticity and the attractiveness of a transformed life. Again, this requires us to stay in close communion with the Holy Spirit and to not let the flesh ever gain the upper hand.

So, the next time you feel, “how can God use me,” consider that your calling is to be an ambassador for Christ, a herald of God’s glory, and a leader in proclaiming the good news of the gospel! Just yield to the leading of the Holy Spirit and watch how God will use you to do great things for His kingdom. Yes, you are called – and the only question is are you willing to answer God’s call!

  1. Our devotion says:
“Yes, you are called – and the only question is are you willing to answer God’s call!”

“As followers of Christ we are called to be before we are called to do and our calling both to be and do is fulfilled only in being called to Him. So calling should not only precede career but outlast it too.” We are first called to be a follower of the Way—our calling is by Christ, to Christ, and for Christ. “Our secondary calling,” Guinness writes, “is that everyone, everywhere, and in everything should think, speak, live, and act entirely for Him.”

  2. Curt you are called to spread his word and to be a great role model to bring us closer to the Lord.
