Any worldview that is not based on the truth is false and can never bring fulfillment to its followers. In our world today, with so many different belief systems, the question of the hour is can anyone with certainty know which one, if any, is worth following? As Christians we believe that knowing Jesus and following the principles of the Bible is the only worldview that is founded on truth.
Jesus boldly proclaims in (John 14:6): “…I am the way, the truth, and the life…” The key question is can we be sure that His claim as the sole arbiter of truth is trustworthy. Christianity, unlike other world religions and belief systems is testable and actually invites people to examine its claims. As I have shown, through many of my past devotions, the Bible is totally accurate in every way – whether from history, science, or prophecy as well as the finest book on ethics and the understanding of human nature.
Jesus, not only proclaims to be the truth, as we read in (John 14:6) above, but that in order to really experience the truth we must develop a deep relationship with Him and the Scriptures. We see this clearly in (John 8:31-32): “Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, ‘If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.’”
Only by abiding in Christ can an individual really know and experience truth. And the only way to really follow Jesus and be obedient to His words is to study the Bible and spend quality time with Him. My friends our world has a myriad of worldviews and religions that claim to be the truth, but only the Bible and its principles have proven, down through the centuries, to have stood the test of time and scrutiny.
As Christians we need to fervently contend for the truth in a world where so many false beliefs abound. Truth is a precious commodity and we should not only get to know it but never compromise it. And studying the Bible is the only sure way to know truth from error. I like what Pastor Charles Swindoll shared on this point: “Just as bank tellers need a thorough knowledge of legitimate currency in order to spot counterfeit bills, so Christians need a thorough knowledge of the Bible in order to spot bogus religious teachings. How grounded are you in the Scriptures? How deep are your theological roots? How capable are you of detecting false teachings?”1
Apologist Norman Geisler shared this important insight on truth when he states: “The Bible constantly exhorts believers to beware of false prophets (Matt.7:15), to test the spirits (1 John 4:1), and to watch out for the doctrines of demons (1 Timothy 4:1). But there is no way to recognize error unless we know the truth; counterfeits cannot be detected unless we know the genuine article. Likewise, there is no way to determine what is false about God unless we know what is true about him. Jesus said, “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:32). A study of the attributes of the true God is essential to the fulfillment of the apologetic task of defending the faith (Philippians 1:7; 1 Peter 3:15; Jude 3).”2
I for one am so grateful that God has not only left us His book of truth, the Bible, but that as a child of God He has given me a new heart that is constantly hungering after knowing more truth about Jesus. Knowing the absolute truth about God can only be, found in the Scriptures, and is the only way to truly have a fulfilling life. All other belief systems and religions either twist the truth or outright deny it. So, the next time someone asks you how can I know the truth about life point them to the only true source of truth – the Bible!
