In yesterday’s devotion I shared some inspiring quotes from Pastor John Piper. Today I would like to share some additional quotations by John to make you realize how great a God we serve.1
“God is not a killjoy; he just opposes what kills joy.”
“This assumes that the glory of Christ is our highest treasure, not health, wealth, family or even life. So, preaching must continually show not that Jesus is the means to prosperity but that he is better than prosperity.”
“The ultimate purpose of life is to show that Jesus is more precious than life.”
“Suffering for Jesus is temporary. Pleasure in Jesus is eternal.”
“Will I find spiritual communion with God sweet enough, and hope in his promises deep enough, not just to cope, but to flourish and rejoice in him?”
“Heaven is a place of unparalleled and indescribable joy.”
“The immensity of His worth is reflected in the intensity of your worship.”
“The inner essence of worship is cherishing Christ as gain – indeed as more gain than all that life can offer – family, career, retirement, fame, food, friends. The essence of worship is experiencing Christ as gain. Or to use words that we love to use around here: it is savoring Christ, treasuring Christ, being satisfied with Christ.”
“The main reason God has given us minds is that we might seek out and find all the reasons that exist for treasuring him in all things and above all things.”
“One of the most important discoveries I have ever made is this truth: God is most glorified in me when I am most satisfied in him. This is the motor that drives my ministry as a pastor. It affects everything I do.”
“People are not prepared or able to rejoice in suffering unless they experience a massive biblical revolution of how they think and feel about the meaning of life. Human nature and American culture make it impossible to rejoice in suffering. This is a miracle in the human soul wrought by God through His Word.”
“God has made us to be conduits of his grace. The danger is in thinking the conduit should be lined with gold. It shouldn’t. Copper will do.”
“Nothing is more vital than prayer in Christian existence, and few things are more vulnerable to neglect.”
“It is unbiblical and arrogant to try to worship God for any other reason than the pleasure to be had in Him.”
“Here is a vocation that will bring you more satisfaction than if you became a millionaire ten times over: Develop the extraordinary skill for detecting the burdens of others and devote yourself daily to making them lighter.”
“Why does God bless us with abundance? So, we can have enough to live on and then use the rest for all manner of good works that alleviate spiritual and physical misery. Enough for us; abundance for others.”
“Oh, that God would help me waken in you a single passion for a single great reality that would unleash you, and set you free from small dreams, and send you, for the glory of Christ, into all the spheres of secular life and to all the peoples of the earth.”
“Christ did not die to make good works merely possible or to produce a half-hearted pursuit. He died to produce in us a passion for good deeds. Christian purity is not the mere avoidance of evil, but the pursuit of good.”
“Christ died that we might live. This is the opposite of abortion. Abortion kills that someone might live differently.”
“This is God’s universal purpose for all Christian suffering: more contentment in God and less satisfaction in the world.”
“The best news of the Christian gospel is that the supremely glorious Creator of the universe has acted in Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection to remove every obstacle between us and himself so that we may find everlasting joy in seeing and savoring his infinite beauty.”
“Being infinite, God is inexhaustibly interesting. It is therefore impossible that God be boring.”
