Intelligent Faith

Sadly, many people believe that if one puts their faith in the God of the Bible that they are committing intellectual suicide. Others believe that only the gullible could trust in an invisible God. And still others say that those who put their trust in the God of Scripture are looking for a crutch to lean on when things get tough.

For those who are seekers of truth, I contend that believing in the God of the Bible takes intelligent faith. Don Stewart states this well when he says: “The Bible encourages people to put their faith in the God of Scripture. Unfortunately, many people equate faith with a blind leap in the dark or wishful thinking. But the faith that the Bible requires is intelligent faith. It is neither blind nor irrational. Biblical faith is a committing trust with an object (God) who is worthy of our faith. No one is asked to sacrifice their intellect when they put their faith in the God of the Bible.”1

Even the Apostle Paul tells us to investigate the claims of Christianity to see if they are true when he says: “Test all things; hold fast what is good.” (1 Thessalonians 5:21). And Jesus tells us to love Him, not just with our hearts but with our intellects when he says: “Jesus said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’” (Matthew 22:37).

While other religions are full of historical and scientific inaccuracies faith in them would be somewhat of a blind leap in the dark since they are not trustworthy. Stewart again adds insight here when he states: “The God of the Bible does not expect people to act in faith toward Him unless that faith is an intelligent faith built upon the solid foundation of what He has done in history and what He has recorded in His Word. He urges us to think and to investigate His claims. In the Bible, we find intelligence equated with knowing the biblical God. Also, foolishness is attributed to those who reject him. Therefore, an intelligent person can and should believe in the God of the Bible.”2

May I submit to you that there are many sound reasons to examine Christianity and they are based not only on intelligent faith, but on the uniqueness of the Bible and its amazing and exciting claims. I believe that a reasonable open-minded seeker of truth would do well to investigate a religion that first, is testable, second, offers free salvation, third, has the best worldview fit of any religion, fourth, has the most unique and influential book ever written, and fifth, features the most compelling person who has ever walked on the face of the earth – Jesus Christ!

If you haven’t examined the claims of Christianity I challenge you to put it to the test and see if it won’t transform your life. I guarantee if you approach the Bible with an open heart and an inquiring mind it will take you on the adventure of a lifetime!

The God of Christianity is not a “god” that you can reason to, He is THE God that we can’t reason without.

  2. Robert Marzullo says:

When Christ was transfigured before the disciples, both Moses representing the logos or written Word of God & the Rhema, spirit of God represented by Elijah appered. So, when we study the Word of God we are to embrace both the written word & the spirit. This is why Jesus said in John chapter 4 that we must worship God in SPIRIT and in TRUTH.
