Did you know that without an orderly God there would be no science? Science operated on rules and orderliness and for it to function we need a universe that is orderly. The most popular theory, that many scientists today believe brought our universe into existence, the “Big Bang theory, just doesn’t make scientific sense. Since when does a massive explosion of matter bring about an orderly universe? Instead, it brings about what you would expect – chaos! The Bible tells us that in the beginning (an orderly God) created (an orderly universe) from nothing.
As I shared in yesterday’s devotion, “If I Only Saw a Miracle,” scientists (many of whom are atheists) say they don’t believe that science can allow for miracles. However, this statement is patently not true since atheist scientists really do believe in miracles.
In yesterday’s devotion I shared the following: “Many atheists say that if they only saw a miracle then they would believe in God. But what the atheist doesn’t realize is that he actually does believe in miracles. In fact, his belief in how the universe came into existence to me is a greater miracle then what we read in (Genesis 1:1). Christians at least believe that an all-powerful eternal God created the universe. What the atheist believes in is an even greater miracle because they believe that nothing, by itself, created everything – our incredibly complex universe!”
Since only God can perform miracles, science by definition got its start when God miraculous created the universe. And it is precisely the exquisite orderliness of our universe that make doing science possible. Fortunately, the history of science is full of scientists who believe that an all-powerful God exists that makes their field of study possible. The following quotes will give you some idea of how God and science go hand in hand.1
“The more I study nature, the more I stand amazed at the work of the Creator. Science brings men nearer to God.” – Louis Pasteur
“Everyone who is seriously involved in the pursuit of science becomes convinced that a spirit is manifest in the laws of the Universe-a spirit vastly superior to that of man, and one in the face of which we with our modest powers must feel humble.” – Albert Einstein
“When I began my career as a cosmologist some twenty years ago, I was a convinced atheist. I never in my wildest dreams imagined that one day I would be writing a book purporting to show that the central claims of Judeo-Christian theology are in fact true, that these claims are straightforward deductions of the laws of physics as we now understand them. I have been forced into these conclusions by the inexorable logic of my own special branch of physics.” – Frank J. Tipler
“I find it quite improbable that such order came out of chaos. There has to be some organizing principle. God to me is a mystery, but is the explanation for the miracle of existence, why there is something instead of nothing.” – Allan Sandage
“There is for me powerful evidence that there is something going on behind it all. . . It seems as though somebody has fine-tuned nature’s numbers to make the Universe. . . The impression of design is overwhelming.” – Paul Davies
“This most beautiful system of the sun, planets and comets, could only proceed from the counsel and dominion of an intelligent and powerful Being.” – Isaac Newton
“Astronomy leads us to a unique event, a universe which was created out of nothing, one with the very delicate balance needed to provide exactly the conditions required to permit life, and one which has an underlying (one might say ‘supernatural’) plan.” – Arno Penzias
“It may seem bizarre, but in my opinion science offers a surer path to God than religion.” – Paul Davies
“I have concluded that we are in a world made by rules created by an intelligence. Believe me, everything that we call chance today won’t make sense anymore. To me it is clear that we exist in a plan which is governed by rules that were created, shaped by a universal intelligence and not by chance.” – Michio Kaku
“For myself, faith begins with a realization that a supreme intelligence brought the universe into being and created man. It is not difficult for me to have this faith, for it is incontrovertible that where there is a plan there is intelligence—an orderly, unfolding universe testifies to the truth of the most majestic statement ever uttered—-‘In the beginning God.’” – Arthur Compton
