Science Brings Us Closer To God

Have you ever watched those nature shows on PBS and marveled at the amazing things that animals can do? I watch in awe at how God has built such incredible skills into the animal kingdom. But almost always there is no mention of God by the narrator of the show. In fact, if there is any commentary on how animals can do the amazing things, they do the usual answer is that evolution has made it all possible. We are told by many of today’s leading scientists that we don’t need God to explain nature. They believe that nature just obeys the natural laws that exist in our universe and that no supernatural explanation is needed. As far as where these universal natural scientific laws came from – they just assume they always existed.

If these atheistic scientists of today would just study the lives of some of their past predecessors, they would discover an amazing thing. Not only were many of the greatest scientists of yesteryear men of genius but they were strong Bible believing Christians. They not only believed in a personal God but that God left many of these scientific laws that always existed to be discovered by these scientists as a testimony of the genius of our incredibly orderly universe.

Before I share what some of our greatest men of science had to say on the relationship between science and faith in God, it is important to realize that for all of these great men of science, they believed that the study of science was not in conflict with the Bible nor does science detract from the worship of God. In fact, as you will see, they all believed that scientific research can only bring you closer to God.

Consider these amazing quotes:

“I build molecules for a living. I can’t begin to tell you how difficult that job is. I stand in awe of God because of what he has done through his creation. My faith has been increased through my research. Only a rookie who knows nothing about science would say science takes away from faith. If you really study science, it will bring you closer to God.”1 – James Tour, one of the world’s leading nano scientists, and a devout Christian.

The more I study nature, the more I stand amazed at the work of the Creator. Science brings men nearer to God.2 – Louis Pasteur

“I believe that the more thoroughly science is studied, the further does it take us from anything comparable to atheism.”3 – Lord Kelvin

“Manned space flight is an amazing achievement, but it has opened for mankind thus far only a tiny door for viewing the awesome reaches of space. An outlook through this peephole at the vast mysteries of the universe should only confirm our belief in the certainty of its Creator. I find it as difficult to understand a scientist who does not acknowledge the presence of a superior rationality behind the existence of the universe as it is to comprehend a theologian who would deny the advances of science.”4 – Wernher von Braun, Great rocket scientist and past Director of NASA

Even Albert Einstein, who didn’t believe in a personal God, once said: “The more I study science, the more I believe in God.”5

The more one ponders how this universe came into existence and how amazingly orderly it is, one must at least admit that blind random chance is not a very good option to side with. It is obvious to me that a painting must have a painter, and a watch must have a watchmaker. Why is it so hard for some to also believe that a universe must have a universe maker who must, by definition, be God. The only other option is that our universe was made by chance. I for one cast my lot with God!

  1. Beautiful!👏👏
How can we doubt His existence if it’s imprinted in everything He created ( Psalm 19:1).
