My friends when was the last time you stood in awe of God? When was the last time you were genuinely “awe struck” with His majesty, power, might, and dominion? If you have ever visited the Grand Canyon the word awe probably comes to mind because this amazing canyon is simply spectacular in beauty and full of wonder. How much more should our Creator, who made this canyon, deserve our reverential awe for His amazing creative genius and omnipotent power!
Just listen to what David proclaims in (Psalm 145:3-7): “Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; his greatness no one can fathom. One generation commends your works to another; they tell of your mighty acts. They speak of the glorious splendor of your majesty—and I will meditate on your wonderful works. They tell of the power of your awesome works—and I will proclaim your great deeds. They celebrate your abundant goodness and joyfully sing of your righteousness.”
When I read the above verses I can’t help but stand in awe at how majestic, loving, powerful, forgiving, and awesome our God is. Not only is He our Creator, but He is our King, Lord, and Savior. And the more we stand in awe of God the more this should move us to worship and adore Jesus, for we read:
“Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our ‘God is a consuming fire.’” (Hebrews 12:28-29).
Below are just four reasons, among many, that we should stand in reverential awe of Jesus:
Reason 1 – We are fearfully and wonderfully made!
In (Psalm 139:14) we read: “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” Each of the 8 billion inhabitants of our planet are a masterpiece of the creative genius of our God. Our complexity is simply breathtaking. Imagine each of us consist of 30 trillion cells and every single cell has a role to play in making you who you are. Our intricate details did not come about by accident as evolutionists claim but through divine design! Our God created each blood cell, muscle, organ, and system within our bodies with a specific purpose. Just imagine how much knowledge God must have supplied to your original single cell that would nine months later form you! We are hand crafted masterpieces and one of a kind originals destined for great things. I marvel and stand in awe at the intelligence and unlimited power our Creator God possesses.
Reason 2 – God knows our past, present, and future!
In (Ephesians 1:4-5) we read: “For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will.” Christian, before there was a universe and before time began, God chose us and adopted us into His family. Simply put in eternity past we existed in the mind of Christ! Presently, the Holy Spirit dwells in each believer and is working out His purposes daily in each Christian’s lives. And as far as the future goes only God knows all the details before any of them unfolds. He knows what I will be doing 10 years from now as well as in eternity future. Not only that but Jesus exists in all three time dimensions simultaneously! I can only stand in awe when I try to comprehend the time dimension of God!
Reason 3 – God is plain crazy about me!
In (Psalm 139:17-18) we read: “How precious to me are your thoughts, God!
How vast is the sum of them! Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand—when I awake, I am still with you.” I believe that next to the Trinity, Jesus considers me the most precious person in the universe! To contemplate that God has a myriad of precious thoughts toward me blows my mind away. I challenge you to meditate on these two verses and not be in absolute awe of Jesus.
Reason 4 – Jesus died at Calvary for me!
It’s hard to comprehend but the Creator of the universe sent His own Son, Jesus Christ, to die in my place for my lifetime of sins. Not only that but God didn’t wait until I cleaned myself up but while I was still caught up in my sins He died for me. Christ took my sins and gave me His righteousness. This awesome exchange – our evil for God’s perfection – is the ultimate definition of grace and is bestowed on all believers in Jesus. I just stand in awe at God’s mercy and love!
Standing in awe of God is something I believe we have too often forgotten, because we are so busy dwelling on ourselves, instead of Jesus. May you take some time to reflect on my four reasons above on why we should always hold God in our highest esteem. They just might fill you with a sense of marvel, mystery, and awe!
AHMEN!
