I like how Billy Graham described how he viewed the Bible: “The Bible is the constant fountain for faith, conduct, and inspiration from which we drink daily.”1
As I meditated over this quote several things came to light that I hope will fill you with so much joy that you can’t wait to open your Bible each morning and drink from this amazing fountain.
First, the Bible is a constant fountain. To me this means that unlike some fountains, that we see in front of large buildings, which are closed during the night hours, the Bible never stops it flow of life-giving sustenance to all who are thirsty for truth and meaning. As one reads the Scriptures they are guaranteed to find fresh daily manna to not only enjoy each day, but to grow closer to Jesus – and what can be better than that!
Second, the Bible is our constant sourcebook to help energize and grow our faith in Jesus. As we read the pages of Scripture we see example after example of men and women who through trials and tribulations have had their faith grow as they learned to lean on the mighty arms of Jesus. Over and over again the Bible has proven to be our training for eternity book, and our basic instructions before leaving earth handbook. As we trust and obey its commands we will see how God delivers us from the perils of life and works all things together for good as we place Jesus first in our lives. So, if you want to see your faith in God increase I highly recommend a steady diet of Scripture reading and meditation.
Third, the Bible, when we study and apply its biblical principles to our daily lives, we will automatically see our conduct conforming to that of Jesus. For example, as we read and hide God’s word in our hearts, we will have great power to say no to sin. (Psalm 119:11) tells us: “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.”
And if you want to have your conduct blessed then why not follow the advice of the psalmist and meditate day and night on the Word of God. (Psalm 1:1-3) shows us how reading the Scriptures should not only be our delight but the key to blessings and leading a rich and rewarding life: “Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers.”
And fourth, the Bible is the most inspirational book ever penned. If you want a fountain that never runs dry of inspiration then consider the following: Jesus’ teachings on the Sermon on the Mount, the Psalms, the Ten Commandments and the continuous love of God for mankind have down through the centuries been the pillars on which millions have anchored their faith. No book can generate more comfort, encouragement and purpose for life than the Bible. So many great masterpieces of art, literature, music and film have been created by people touched with the message of God that our world would be deprived of much of its very heart and soul if it were deprived of this one book. So, if its inspiration you want, why not make the constant fountain of Scripture your daily go to book.
My friends rest assured the Bible is a unique fountain that will never run dry and no matter how often you read, study, and meditate on its contents, I guarantee that sheer delight will fill your soul!
