Abraham Lincoln once remarked, “I believe the Bible is the best gift God has ever given to man. All the good from the Savior of the world is communicated to us through this Book.” But just what would motivate our 16th President of the United States to make such a claim? Could it just be that honest Abe echoed the sentiment of another United States President, Woodrow Wilson, when he boldly proclaimed, “The Bible is the one supreme source of revelation of the meaning of life, the nature of God and spiritual nature and need of men. It is the only guide of life which really leads the spirit in the way of peace and salvation.”
I like what President Wilson said when he shared that the Bible is, “the only guide of life which really leads the spirit in the way of peace and salvation.” I believe that President Lincoln understood that the best gift that God could give us is the ability to experience peace in this life and the salvation of our soul in the afterlife. Lincoln knew that only the Bible can deliver on these twin goals in life and as a result he exalted the Bible as the best gift God could give to man.
But it is one thing for the Bible to make this claim of giving us a chance of realizing true peace and salvation – but the question is can the Bible deliver on this claim. The reality is that millions, down through the centuries, have cast their lot with believing in the wonderful claims of the Scriptures – and have not been disappointed. For these millions, the decision to believe the claims of the Bible and accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior have yielded wonderful peace, unsurpassed joy and rich meaning in life.
Abraham Lincoln, like so many other seekers of truth, examined the internal and external evidences for the veracity of the Bible and concluded the following: “I decided a long time ago that it was less difficult to believe that the Bible was what it claimed to be than to disbelieve it.” What about you? If you are still searching for true meaning in life why not open the Bible and let the light of God flood your heart!
