Simply put there is no book like the Bible. It’s the most printed book in all of history. With over five billion copies coming off the press there is no book even close to it. It’s the book that is banned from being read by countless millions of people – more than any other book ever written. It’s inspirational. Jesus’ teachings on the Sermon on the Mount, the Psalms, the Ten Commandments and the continuous love of God for mankind have down through the centuries been the pillars on which millions have anchored their faith. No book can generate more comfort, encouragement and purpose for life than the Bible. So many great masterpieces of art, literature, music and film have been created by people touched with the message of God that our world would be deprived of much of its very heart and soul if it were deprived of this one book. And its message is powerful! (Hebrews 4:12) boldly proclaims: “For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”
Charles Spurgeon said it well: “The more you read the Bible, and the more you meditate upon it, the more you will be astonished with it. He who is but a casual reader of the Bible, does not know the height, the depth, the length, and breadth of the mighty meanings contained in its pages.”1 And John F. Walvoord adds: “Wherever the Bible has been consistently applied, it has dramatically changed the civilization and culture of those who have accepted its teaching. No other book has ever so dramatically changed the individual lives and society in general.”2
And what about the central figure of the Bible – Jesus Christ? Well nobody has said it better than historian Philip Schaff who once remarked: “Jesus of Nazareth, without money and arms, conquered more millions than Alexander the Great, Caesar, Mohammed, and Napoleon; without science and learning, he shed more light on things human and divine than all philosophers and scholars combined; without the eloquence of school, he spoke such words of life as were never spoken before or since, and produced effects which lie beyond the reach of orator or poet; without writing a single line, he set more pens in motion, and furnished themes for more sermons, orations, discussions, learned volumes, works of art, and songs of praise than the whole army of great men of ancient and modern times.”3
And if these amazing things about the Bible are not astonishing enough consider the following two lines of reasoning that clearly show why the Bible is the only supernatural book ever written – Prophecy and science.
Prophecy
Simply put prophecy is the declaration of future events such as no human wisdom or forecast is sufficient to make. And when it comes to prophecy there is no religion extant in the world with one viable, believable, verifiable prophecy except Christianity. The Quran, the Book of Mormon, the Hindu Vedas, and all the other sacred religious writings boast no fulfilled prophecies in them. One of the greatest proofs of the truthfulness and supernatural nature of the Bible is fulfilled prophecy. It is staggering in its amount. It is extra-Biblical in its verification. According to apologist, Charlie Campbell: “Sports analysts, political pundits, and astrologers enjoy making predictions about the future. But their failure rate quickly reveals how inept humans are at foretelling events. This is one of the reasons the Bible’s fulfilled prophecies are so astounding. Over and over, the authors of the Bible rightly foretold future events, often hundreds of years in advance. The Bible is filled with hundreds of specific, detailed prophecies about people, places, and events—many of which have already come to pass.”4
Science
Now what about the scientific accuracy of the Bible. I contend that whenever the Bible speaks about science it is always accurate. Not only that but one of the greatest proofs that the Bible is a supernatural book is that there are many things written in the word of a God that were not discovered to be scientifically accurate until sometimes hundreds and even thousands of years later. Again apologist, Charlie Campbell, shared his insights here: “The men who penned the Scriptures revealed several amazing facts about the Earth and the universe thousands of years before scientists discovered these declarations to be true. This is astounding!…These men lived two, three, four thousand years before the invention of the telescope, microscopes, satellites, deep-diving submarines, and other technologies were around…So how did they know these things? They had ‘inside information’ from the One who created the universe.”5
We could go on and on sharing thoughts on why the Bible is such an astonishing book. In closing, I concur with the words of Winkie Pratney who said: “No other work of man in any language even faintly resembles the intricate structure and design of the Bible. The fact remains – only an infinite mind could have devised this Book of books.”6
