Inspirational author Max Lucado once commented: “If your God is mighty enough to ignite the sun, could it be that He is mighty enough to light your path?”1 We all need guidance to walk the Christian journey and thankfully God has left us with the ultimate guidebook for living – the Bible.
My friends the written word of God is so precious because from beginning to end it points to the living word of God – Jesus! (Psalm 119:105) tells us: “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” And just as the written word of God is a lamp and a light to our path, we know that Jesus is the great lamp and light of our lives. When we allow Jesus into our hearts He brings peace and joy that nothing this world can offer can supply. He promises to be like a friend that sticks closer than a brother. And He gives us life with purpose and dignity and a certain eternal future that is awaiting us when we pass from death to life.
Our Bible is like a compass that always guides us in the right direction. And Jesus is always there cheering us on each step of the way as we journey through life. He also allows us the wonderful privilege to talk and pray to Him as often as we like. And if that were not enough the Holy Spirit is always there to illuminate the Scriptures to our minds and to comfort our hearts at all times.
As we read the Bible we will gain amazing insights on how to live and become sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s leading in our lives. Without the divine guidance the Bible imparts to us we run the risk of running our lives into the ground. Thankfully, the more we read the Scriptures the more divine illumination will become our compass helping us chart a wonderful journey on this road called life.
The website, GotQuestions.org, shares an excellent insight on why the Bible is so essential with providing us with the needed truth for navigating the difficult moral choices we often are confronted with when it says: “Ideas like moral relativism, situational ethics, and subjectivism make staying on the right path all the more challenging and perplexing. Worldly voices claim, ‘There are many paths to God,’ ‘There’s no such thing as absolute truth,’ and ‘Just do what feels right to you.’ If we aren’t careful about the choices we make, if we listen to these voices rather than rely on God’s illuminating truth to guide us on the right roads, we will quickly encounter grief and ruin.”2
A wonderful companion verse to (Psalm 119:105) is (2 Timothy 3:16-17): “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” As we diligently study God’s Word we can be confident that it will provide us with the direction, insight, correction, wisdom, guidance, and illumination needed to live in this dark and sinful world.
As Christians we are so blessed to have the written Word as a light to our path and the living Word, Jesus, as the light of the world (John 8:12). With our world being lost in darkness it is essential to have the right light to shatter this darkness. So, let’s shine that “right light” – Jesus – wherever we go!

Two more quotes about light.
I would not give much for your religion unless it can be seen. Lamps do not talk, but they do shine.
The Bible is not the light of the world, it is the light of the Church. But the world does not read the Bible, the world reads Christians! “You are the light of the world.”
Charles Spurgeon
“Don’t shine so that others can see you. Shine so that through you, others can see HIM.” Clive Staples Lewis
