As Christians we are so blessed to have the written Word as a light to our path and the living Word, Jesus, as the light of the world (John 8:12). With our world being lost in darkness it is essential to have the right light to shatter this darkness. So, let’s shine that “right light” – Jesus – wherever we go!
Not only is Jesus the “right light” but the book that is all about Him, the Holy Bible, should be our “great delight.” Charles Spurgeon summed up this thought well when he said: “The Word of God is a lamp by night, a light by day, and a delight at all times.”1
My friends the written word of God is so precious because from beginning to end it points to the living word of God – Jesus! (Psalm 119:105) tells us: “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” And just as the written word of God is a lamp and a light to our path, we know that Jesus is the great lamp and light of our lives. When we allow Jesus into our hearts He brings peace and joy that nothing this world can offer can supply. He promises to be like a friend that sticks closer than a brother. And He gives us life with purpose and dignity and a certain eternal future that is awaiting us when we pass from death to life.
Our Bible is like a compass that always guides us in the right direction. And Jesus is always there cheering us on each step of the way as we journey through life. He also allows us the wonderful privilege to talk and pray to Him as often as we like. And if that were not enough the Holy Spirit is always there to illuminate the Scriptures to our minds and to comfort our hearts at all times.
And because the Holy Spirit is our great illuminator He does something that the unregenerate man can never understand – The Holy Spirit makes reading the Bible a great delight!
As I read my Bible I get to eavesdrop on the conversations of Jesus; the Creator of the universe. I get to learn what God’s will is for my life and how I can play a part in advancing His wonderful kingdom on earth. I get to learn how to experience peace and joy even in the trials of life. I learn that because I have a personal relationship with Jesus I get to spend eternity with Him when I pass from this brief time here on planet earth. And as amazing and wonderful, as these things are, I get to meditate on the holy Scriptures throughout the day – and this is my greatest delight.
Imagine having a book that during our darkest hours serves as a lamp to lead us out of darkness by surrounding us with the living word – Jesus Christ! Not only that, but the Bible is also the most amazing light that allows us to see clearly what path we need to travel on to enjoy maximum peace and joy as we journey through life. And as far as being a delightful read the Bible is just jammed packed with more action, adventure, romance, intrigue, wisdom, life and inspiration than in any other book ever written. And its inspirational value is literally off the charts! And the thing that really makes the Bible a delightful read is that it allows us to go on the greatest treasure hunt anyone could ever want. Sprinkled throughout its pages are nuggets of pure gold that God has designed to delight the soul and provide maximum peace and joy.
Just think, God has left us with everything we need to enjoy life to the fullest in His great love letter to us – the Bible. So the next time you pick up your Bible be prepared to journey on the most delightful reading experience of a lifetime!
