The Bible – The Book of Certainty in an Uncertain World

With the corona virus wreaking havoc in our world today, with racial tensions running high in our society, and with a very up and down stock market, is it any wonder from an American perspective that uncertainty is the only thing we can be certain about. Not to mention we live in a society where morality is relative to who you are talking to, political correctness has everyone on pins and needles, and true meaning in life seems harder and harder to come by. It is no wonder that suicide, drug overdoses, and trips to mental health professionals are at record highs.

Fortunately, with a world that is spiraling out of control we have a book that is build on a solid foundation – the Bible! Only the Bible can give us the answers and comfort we need when things seem out of control because the one who wrote the Bible is in total control of a world gone haywire. Let’s look at the three areas of uncertainty that I described in my opening paragraph – morality, political correctness, and meaning – and see what answers we can find in the Holy Scriptures.

In America the morality of today is very different than say 100 years ago. 100 years ago, abortion was illegal, gay marriage was unthinkable, and segregation in the south was a way of life. Clearly these major lifestyle decisions have totally changed in our society today. For you see morality is relative to what the majority of people decide it should be. As a result, with no moral compass to navigate with we are left to society, to tell us what is right and wrong. This is a very dangerous way to live since sinful man is not capable of defining right from wrong without some sort of absolute standard to go by. I for one am glad that we do have an absolute standard on issues of morality – the Bible. Without the Bible morality is bound to suffer since mankind often chooses what feels good and not what God calls right. My friends let’s not choose what society says is morality right unless it lines up with what the Bible says is correct behavior – if you do you will please God and be certain you are doing the right thing.

What about political correctness. Well, it is so pervasive in our country today that it is almost impossible to say or do anything that might not offend someone. So instead we as Christians are told not to share the Gospel because we might hurt someone’s feelings by telling them they are a sinner. By definition the Gospel is politically and socially offensive to many and if we go the route of political correctness, we probably won’t tell people they are in desperate need to repent and be saved. Political correctness is one of the devil’s key tools in causing us to stay silent when it comes to a person’s eternal destiny.

And when it comes to how can one find true meaning in an uncertain world the answer is, they can’t without the Bible. True meaning by definition can’t be found without a relationship with God. Blaise Pascal, the great seventeenth century mathematician and scientist, once said that every man is born with a spiritual vacuum that only Jesus Christ can fill. You see the Bible is the only book that convicts men of sin and leads them to salvation. Only the Bible gives us absolute certainty that we will spend eternity with God through accepting Jesus into our lives. And it is also absolutely certain that even if you lead a comfortable life now and accumulate great wealth that it will all be for naught if you don’t have your life right with God. For we read in (Mark 8:36): “For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?” True and deep meaning is a certainty both now, and in the hereafter, for all of us who cast our lot with Jesus.

I for one am glad that in an uncertain and chaotic world I can rejoice in the book of absolute certainty on how to live my life right and enjoy maximum joy both now and on into eternity – the Bible.

  1. Peter Anselmini says:

Hi Curt, I have been reading your daily messages. They are very thorough, well researched and detailed. I commend you for your ministry. Two points to share with you in a spirit of love: One – perhaps a bit too long for the average reader or unsaved individual to stay with. Two – one might get the idea the BIBLE is to be revered, not JESUS HIMSELF. I know Jesus is your intention but Just giving you my impression. As you close each devotional it seems the Bible is lauded whereas an ending paragraph that hooks back to Jesus would nicely tie it all back to Him.
