Our internal makeup is unbelievably complex. In order to perform the thousands of different processes that are going on inside the trillions of cells within our bodies, we need to supply each one of these cells with oxygen, water and food. This is accomplished through the blood, which circulates throughout our entire body constantly from moment to moment, from year to year. The blood is also essential in combating disease. In fact, the “gift of Life” is many times the gift of blood through transfusions.
This medical fact was firmly established in 1628 by William Harvey, through his observations of the circulatory system. Before that time, doctors took blood out of people in the hope of healing them. Today, we give blood to patients to speed healing. Our blood is the very network of life within us.
The Bible, far from being just a spiritual book, happens to know quite a bit of biology also. Perhaps William Harvey compared notes with the Bible, for Leviticus 17:11 says, “For the life of the flesh is in the blood.” Over two thousand years before William Harvey discovered one of the great keys to human life, God revealed it to us in such precise words.
