The Gift of Sight

Eyesight – we usually take it for granted but for the 40 million people in our world today total blindness is a harsh reality. Eyesight is one of the greatest gifts God has given to man and the human eye clearly shows God’s creative genius on display. The human eye and the process of sight is so amazingly complex that only our all-powerful God could have created it. For some interesting reading on this subject see my devotion dated July 20, 2020, called The Human Eye – Evolution’s Worst Nightmare1

For those who have normal vision I implore you not to take this for granted but to thank the Lord daily for the gift of sight. I would like to share with you my personal journey with eyesight and why I thank the Lord daily for this most precious gift.

This past Wednesday (February 23) I underwent cataract surgery to remove a very large congenital (from birth) cataract in my left eye. Eyesight, you see, has always been a problem for me. My left eye from birth has basically been useless. Everything I see has always been totally blurred and I basically can’t see anything but shadows. My right eye, thankfully, while far from perfect, allows me to see clear vision but only at 20 – 50. What this means is I have to be at 20 feet away to see things that a normal 20 -20 person can see from 50 feet away. This is all I have known my entire life.

Well, my surgery went well and they removed the cataract from my left eye but there was no improvement in my sight. My eye surgeon told me that there still may be a chance for me to get some vision back because right in the center of my left eye is a huge piece of plaque that may be what is blocking sight. He plans, in a month or two, to remove the plaque via laser and hopefully this may give me some sight. I covet your prayers for this procedure and I will update you on the results. My eye surgeon chose not to remove the plaque during my surgery because he said it is like scotch tape and when you remove the tape it may tear the membrane and cause major complications with the surgery – I told him I agreed with his assessment not to remove it at that time.

While I am disappointed that I didn’t get any added sight back I am grateful for the limited sight I do have and pray that for all of you that see normally, not to take this gift for granted. Eyesight is a cause for daily celebration and thanksgiving to the Lord for you never know when you may lose it. So often we complain over little things and forget to give thanks and praise to Jesus for the many blessings He has given us. Just how valuable is your eyesight? Well, would you trade it for one billion dollars. I dare say few would be willing to go blind even if they could become an instant billionaire. So, the next time you check your personal bank account realize that though it may be small you indeed are very, very rich!

Why not take the time to take inventory of all of your blessings – I guarantee you will begin to spend more time in thanking Jesus for the vast sum of them. And, oh, by the way a thankful heart will add years to your life expectancy.

  1. Greetings Curt!

Interesting, I didn’t know this about you. I have a similar problem with my left eye in that it didn’t develop properly as I was growing up, so I can see color and motion but I can’t make out details of what I am seeing. Thank God that I still have decent vision in my right eye, enough to be able to drive. Just think, when we pass from this life, we will see things completely different and all will be brand new for us! God bless you both!

  2. Have you had the surgery to remove the plaque? Has your eyesight improved Curt?
I’m eager to meet you…then we’ll share our eye stories.
    Elaine
