There are many doctrines in Christian circles that honest believers can debate on. For example, is tithing for today or when does the rapture occur. Honest Christians can disagree on these non-salvation issues and still enjoy fellowship. However, when it comes to the gospel, I totally agree with what Steven Lawson said: “There is a zero-tolerance policy for any tampering with the gospel. Contending for the purity of the gospel is a hill worth dying on.”1
Christianity will never be popular with the masses because at its core it is totally intolerant with all other belief systems that promote a different gospel. And how could it be otherwise. According to the Christian gospel there is only one way to have a relationship with God and that is through faith in Christ. All other belief systems are based on a works gospel while Christianity states no amount of good works will ever earn our way to God. Christian exclusivity is the hallmark of the gospel and to state otherwise doesn’t just water down the gospel but destroys it.
In today’s society tolerance of all belief systems will gain you approval with the masses but disapproval with the one true God – Jesus. For there are many religious roads that lead to hell, but only one that leads to heaven – Jesus! My friends the gospel has to be exclusive because Jesus is unique and the only true God in the world. When Jesus shared in (John 14:6): “…I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me,’” He, in the world’s eyes, made one of the most intolerant statements ever uttered. And the gospel, by definition, has to be exclusive because it requires a unique sacrifice for sin – the perfect God-man Jesus.
The gospel is God’s masterplan of salvation and is not subject to tampering with or negotiation. By definition it must be intolerant of other religious viewpoints since the gospel is the only way of salvation. As Christians we need to be prepared to share a message that will prove offensive to the majority of people yet pleasing to God. Telling people that they are sinners that need a Savior will never be popular but, when we realize that the eternal destiny of their souls lies in the balance, I pray we just may get motivated to share the wonderful message of the gospel!
