Have you ever wondered what the greatest privilege in life is? Some of the things that come to mind might include living in our great free country – America. Having a loving spouse. And maybe even being blessed with good health. But as wonderful as these things are I believe Sinclair B. Ferguson hit the nail on the head when he stated: “Knowing God is your single greatest privilege as a Christian.”1
Have you ever taken time to realize what an incredible privilege it is to know God? Imagine the sovereign Creator of the universe, the one who spoke all the stars and planets into existence, the One who existed from eternity past, the One who died for you and me so we could spend eternity with Him, has allowed us the awesome privilege to get to know Him!
And the most exciting thing about our relationship with God is that we can not only know Him but we can spend the rest of our lives learning just how wonderful a God we serve. I love what Wayne Grudem says about how we can reciprocate this awesome love that God has lavished on us when he shares: “God does not need us or the rest of creation for anything, yet we and the rest of creation can glorify him and bring him joy.”2
Before there was a universe God existed in perfect harmony and fellowship within the Trinity. He didn’t need anything but out of His great love He decided to create us so we could share in this most wonderful relationship. I can think of no greater privilege than to spend the rest of my life getting to know my Creator better and worshipping and glorifying His name.
And praise God thanks to the Holy Bible we can truly get to know Him as we read all about His character and deeds in the Scriptures. And for me this is the greatest reason to pour over the Scriptures so I can get to know Jesus better. And the more I get to know Him the greater I realize what an amazing privilege I have to be His child; and have all my needs provided for by Him.
In closing I would like to leave you with this precious thought by J. I. Packer: “Living becomes an awesome business when you realize that you spend every moment of your life in the sight and company of an omniscient, omnipresent Creator.”3
