The Seriousness of Sin

Sin is serious business. It is because of sin that all of us are born spiritually separated from God. Thankfully, Jesus died for our sins and has given us the chance to have our relationship with God restored by faith in the redemptive work of the cross. Sadly, in America today sin is not only not taken seriously but many people have made great financial profits from it. Let me explain.

Movies today are full of illicit sexual activities that they peddle off as entertainment. This sad state of affairs must break the heart of Jesus. Pastor John MacArthur summed up this situation as follows: “We should not be entertained by the sins for which Christ died.”1

The internet allows pornography to be viewed by young and old alike causing millions to be addicted to this extreme form of sin.

Our government allows many harmful products like cigarettes to be legally sold causing our bodies to be subject to cancer and decay.

And if these trends were not bad enough our school system is telling our precious children to use condoms when they have sex outside of marriage instead of abstinence.

I could go on but suffice it to say that our society has a love affair with sin and this trend is only getting worse. As Christians we must always stand against sin and call it out for what it is – an abomination to God. As John MacArthur rightly stated in my quote above we should never be entertained by the sins for which Jesus died. Instead, we should abstain from them at all cost and live holy lives bringing honor and glory to Jesus; instead of reproach.

To my male friends I challenge you to follow Job’s example when he said: “I made a covenant with my eyes not to look lustfully at a young woman.” (Job 31:1). And to all Christians may we heed the timeless advice found in (Psalm 119:11): “Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You.” The more we fall in love with the written word the more we will want to stay far away from sin. Let’s wake up every day and say yes to Jesus and no to sin.
