Did you know that even for the Christian tomorrow isn’t promised? In our world today, planet Earth has over seven billion inhabitants. As of 2021 statistics show that every day approximately 164,000 people on our globe will take their last breathe as they pass on into eternity. That comes out to almost 7,000 deaths per hour, 115 per minute, or 2 per second!1
You have heard it said that there are only two things that are certain: death and taxes. But I disagree because you can avoid paying taxes but nobody will escape death.
I will turn 68 on July 17, 2021 and if the Lord gives me another 20 years of life, that means I only have 7,300 days left to live. And if I only live to 80 I will have only 4,380 days left to live. I don’t know about you but when I look at my remaining mortality I have precious few days left. And if you consider that almost 1/3 of my days are spent in sleeping these numbers get even smaller. Each of you reading this devotion can calculate the days you have left if you live to say 80 or 90. And I challenge you to do this because regardless of your present age I think you will agree that all of us have precious few days left to live.
While I will admit that the above scenarios seem morbid there is indeed great news if you know Jesus, because while tomorrow isn’t promised, when you follow Jesus, eternity is!
If you worship at the shrine of science then you are told that you came from nothing and when you die you go back to nothing. That doesn’t sound very appealing to me.
But Christianity is the only religion that states that when you were born you were created in the image of God. It is the only religion that states it is your inherent sin nature that causes an early death. And it is the only religion that can guarantee you an eternal extension of life past your date with death. You see the only way to reverse the curse of death is through Jesus. When Jesus died on the cross He paid the penalty for your sins – which is eternal separation from God in a literal hell. When you acknowledge that you are a sinner and repent, and invite Jesus to be your Lord and Savior, a destiny change takes place in your life. You get to spend eternity with Jesus! And even if you only have a few years left in this life you can rejoice because death is no longer final but just a portal to a new beginning of life with Jesus!
Your timeclock is ticking. Your date with death is approaching. Science says you are going back to nothing. But the Bible states you have an eternal soul whose destiny is weighing in the balance. What you choose to do with Jesus Christ now will determine your eternal destiny. The only decision you will ever have to make in life that has eternal implications concerns what will you do with Jesus. If you choose to deny Him you will one day have to face a holy God who will banish you forever – because of your sins – and consign you to hell. But if you choose to acknowledge Him as Lord and Savior an eternity of blessings and bliss await you. If you are on the fence I implore you to read the Bible to see just who Jesus is and why your eternal destiny is at stake.
My friends tomorrow isn’t promised but for those who know Jesus eternity is!
Amen, the brevity of human life
YES! In fact, I don’t care how many days I have left,…I’m looking forward to Heaven, and being with Jesus.
(PS…I’m a lot older than you)
