Mankind, down through the centuries, has tried to find fulfillment in life in a variety of ways. Whether it be through a career or a spouse or fame the results, at best, have fallen short of true fulfillment. And the reason is simple: we are all wired in such a way that true fulfillment can only come when we enter into a special relationship with our Maker. Blaise Pascal, the great French mathematician said over 350 years ago: “There is a God shaped vacuum in the heart of every man which cannot be filled by any created thing, but only by God, the Creator, made known through Jesus.”1
Before I came to know Jesus in 1981 I didn’t even realize, at the time, that I had a spiritual vacuum but I knew something was radically missing in my heart. To the outside observer I was doing great. I had a great job working as a financial analyst for JP Morgan Chase. I had a great education, graduating from Princeton University and New York University Business School. And I had a bright future. The only problem was that I felt empty inside. So, in order to find fulfillment and meaning in life I decided to read what the great thinkers of the past had to say on this subject. Not only that but I began to explore Eastern mysticism, transcendental meditation and a host of other belief systems. The result was that I had more questions on what the meaning of life was than before I started this journey!
It was as if I was trying to fit a square peg into a round whole – it just doesn’t fit! But praise God one day a friend of mind gave me a copy of the New Testament and told me to read it. Well, I loved to read and read the entire New Testament in a week. As a result, I, for the first time in my life, slowly began to realize that the vacuum I was experiencing in my heart was spiritual in nature and could only be filled by Jesus Christ. And after a six month intense study of Christianity, the Holy Spirit totally opened my eyes, convicted me of sin, illuminated my mind and heart, and led me to Christ – the ultimate and only source of true fulfillment in life.
My friends Jesus is the only true source of joy, fulfillment, and wisdom in life. Sinclair B. Ferguson states this so beautifully when he shared: “God is God; you are but one of His creatures. Your only joy is to be found in obeying Him, your true fulfillment is to be found in worshiping Him, your only wisdom is to be found in trusting and knowing Him.”2
