Trusting Jesus, I believe, is the ultimate cure for Christians who still struggle with their battles with worry. For you see when we cast our cares on Jesus, He gives us His absolute assurance that He will work all things together for Good. (Romans 8:28).
My friends, sometimes we just don’t realize how illogical we treat our relationship with Jesus. If He is able to care for the entire universe, then He certainly can take care of us. Hannah Whitall Smith shares this thought well when she stated: “You find no difficulty in trusting the Lord with the management of the universe and all the outward creation, and can your case be any more complex or difficult than these, that you need to be anxious or troubled about His management of it?”1
While we often worry because the future is unknown to us it is not unknown to God. According to Corrie Ten Boom: “Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God.”2 I really like the insight that Peter Marshall shared when he stated: “God will not permit any troubles to come upon us, unless He has a specific plan by which great blessing can come out of the difficulty.”3 And Jerry Bridges echoes this sentiment when he said: “If we are going to learn to trust God in adversity, we must believe God will allow nothing to subvert His glory so He will allow nothing to spoil the good He is working out in us and for us.”4
No wonder we read in the Scriptures: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.” (Proverbs 3:5-6). What a wonderful way to live, by trusting in the Lord and His infallible ways instead of relying on our fallible ways and often unstable emotions. Also, notice here when we acknowledge Christ and line up with His will, He promises to direct our paths.
One other great way to have victory over worry is to take all of our concerns to the Lord in prayer. William James said it well: “The sovereign cure for worry is prayer.”5 I have found in my own life that it is very hard to pray and worry at the same time.
In addition, there is no substitute for reading and meditating on the Word of God. When we do this we see how faithful God is in meeting His children’s needs. And quite honestly his track record is perfect! Life will always be filled with hard times and there will be plenty of opportunities to worry. But at the same time there will always be the opportunity to trust in Jesus, pray, and cast our cares on Him.
In closing, I leave you with a quote you just might want to memorize. It’s from the prince of preachers, Charles H. Spurgeon: “As for His failing you, never dream of it — hate the thought of it. The God who has been sufficient until now should be trusted to the end.”6
