The Scriptures teach that God is eternal, that He had no beginning and will have no end. We see this concept expressed clearly in (Psalm 90:2): “Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.” So, the simple answer is that nobody created God – He always existed!
A common argument from atheists is that if all things need a cause, then God must also need a cause. Christians, however, believe that anything that has a beginning must have a cause. Since the universe had a beginning it must have a beginner (or a cause). However, since God always existed (He had no beginning) there is no need for Him to have a beginner (or a cause). It is clear that God has been God from all eternity.
In the same way, God is not in the category of things that are created or caused. God is uncaused and uncreated—He simply exists. We are use to thinking that everything must have a beginning, but it is clear that there had to be something that has existed eternally. The reason we know this is that if there was ever a time when nothing existed then nothing could have come from nothing. Therefore, nothing could have come into existence. But since things exist there must have been something eternally existing. We call this ever-existing thing God. He is the uncaused Being or the uncaused Creator.
When you come to think of it the question of who created God is irrational since God is by definition eternal and uncreated. And if there were no God from eternity past then our only other choice would be lifeless matter being eternal. But to have created such an infinitely complex and orderly universe would require an infinite Being with infinite power and knowledge – which basically describes the God of the universe – not lifeless matter.
The problem for atheists is that they are trying to use their finite minds to fully comprehend an infinite, eternal God – and this is not possible. We already live in a world where we accept many self-evident things. For example, we don’t try to prove that parallel lines never meet – we just accept that this is self-evident. As Christians we also don’t try to prove that God exists. We just accept His eternal existence as self-evident. And fortunately, He has left us with many amazing demonstrations of His existence, from the beauty of nature, to the genius of the Bible. The signature of God’s existence is written all over His universe for those who choose to open their eyes!
Today’s devotion states: “The problem for atheists is that they are trying to use their finite minds to fully comprehend an infinite, eternal God – and this is not possible.”
This is most certainly true and I would take it to the next level by saying, “The problem for atheists is not just the impossibility of a finite mind trying to comprehend God but their enmity against God, too.” Unsaved man’s mind is not just “finite” but it is depraved, as well. Aquinas taught that man’s unaided reason could comprehend truth. That the Fall affected man’s will but not his intellect. That teaching opened the floodgates of humanism that has infected society to this day.
Unbelievers are not seeking comprehension but suppressing the truth in unrighteousness. If we look at man’s problem as lacking knowledge rather than outright rebellion, we will endlessly apply the wrong methodology to challenge his worldview.
