Sadly, many Christians today find reading the Bible dull and boring and going to church a chore. These believers even find the whole idea of Christianity one long list of do’s and don’t that leave them unfulfilled.
I, too, as a young Christian, found large portions of the Scriptures dull and boring, until one day the light when on in my Bible reading and my love for God’s Word has never been the same. Let me explain.
As a fairly new Christian I read the book of Deuteronomy and found it very boring. I decided to read through this book a second time, sadly, feeling the same way. However, before reading this book a third time I basically told God that there must be something wrong with me since I knew in my heart that God would never make a large portion of the Old Testament dull and boring. So I asked the Holy Spirit to open the words of the book of Deuteronomy and make them alive, dynamic, and life changing to my heart. Well, God did and this third time this amazing book became alive and a sheer delight to my soul. My friends if you find the Bible and Christianity dull and boring I implore you to have a long conversation with the Lord and ask Him to transform your perspective from dull to delight. To see how this happened to me please read my three-part devotional series on Deuteronomy below:
Deuteronomy – Dynamic, Delightful or Dull? – Part I – Bible Apologetics – A DAILY DEVOTIONAL
Deuteronomy – Dynamic, Delightful or Dull? – Part II – Bible Apologetics – A DAILY DEVOTIONAL

I love how pastor and theologian Joseph Stowell put it when he shared the following: “If Christianity is dull and boring, if it is a burden and not a blessing, then most likely we are involved in a project, not a Person – a system not a Savior, rules rather than a relationship.”1
For you see Christianity is all about Jesus. I recently got an email from my friend Kurtis who said it so well. He started his email: “Hey Curt, Merry Christmas! I hope that this Christmas it’s not about the presents under the tree but his presence!” I think his greeting sums up the essence of Christianity.
If we make Jesus the center of our devotion, getting to know Him the consuming desire of our heart, and sharing, with all we meet, just why He is the ultimate joy giver, we will never be bored again! Too often we miss the point that Pastor Stowell shared when he said that Christianity is first and foremost about a relationship with a loving God and not about a long list of rules.
May I challenge you to fall more in love with our Savior, and as you do, you will never find Christianity dull and boring again. On the contrary, you will find it the adventure of a lifetime and the greatest investment of your time, talent, and treasury. And I guarantee you that the more you read the Word, with an open heart, the more you will fall in love with its author – Jesus Christ.
