Worldviews and the Opinions of Men

empty forest

According to my good friend Greg Enos: “A worldview is simply the set of beliefs that a person has about the biggest questions in life. It’s like a pair of glasses or lenses through which we view the world every day.”1 Greg goes on to say that some of the questions we all face in life include questions of origin, meaning, morality, and destiny. According to Greg a worldview provides truth claims about reality.2

Since I started my devotional back in June 2020 I have attempted to show my readers why Christianity is not only the best worldview, but the only one that has solid evidence to back it up. Whether from history, science, ethics and morality, prophecy, and any other discipline, Christianity and its truth claims about reality have stood the test of time.

I can’t think of a more wonderful worldview than the Christian one. It is full of joy and rich meaning and is so intellectually sound based on solid evidence. We can be confident that when we cast our lot with Jesus we have made a wise and life changing decision.

Charles Spurgeon once made this fascinating comment when referring to the book on which the Christian worldview is based, the Bible: “The Word of God is the anvil upon which the opinions of men are smashed.”3 Since Christianity claims to be the only divine truth given to man, all other worldviews, that contradict the Bible are by definition the opinions of men and false.

With so many belief systems claiming to be the truth how can we know which, if any, are indeed true? Why, for example, should someone accept the teachings of the Bible over those taught in the Quran or the Book of Mormon?

Well for starters these other so-called sacred books have serious flaws in the historical and scientific arenas.  And not only that, but only the Bible makes prophetic claims that have been fulfilled – no other book has even one fulfilled prophecy!

May the following three quotes give you a picture as to why the Bible and Christianity stand unique among all other religions worldviews:

Professor Monier Williams spent over 40 years studying the religious literature of the Orient – His conclusion follows: “Pile them, if you will, on the left side of your study table; but place your own Holy Bible on the right side – all by itself, all alone and with a wide gap between them. For,…there is a gulf between it and the so-called sacred books of the East which severs the one from the other utterly, hopelessly, and forever…”4

Dave Hunt, the late American Christian apologist once commented when speaking on the Book of Mormon: “Not one piece of evidence has ever been found to support the Book of Mormon-not a trace of the large cities it names, no ruins, no coins, no letters or documents or monuments, nothing in writing. Not even one of the rivers or mountains or any of the topography it mentions has ever been identified.”5

And fulfilled prophecy sets the Bible apart from every other religious book. From political pundits to astrologers mankind has an abysmal success rate in making predictions. According to apologist, Charlie Campbell: “No other book in the world is able to substantiate its claims with this kind of supernatural ability to rightly foretell future events. There are no fulfilled prophecies in the Quran, the Hindu Vedas, the Book of Mormon, or any other sacred religious writings. Not one. Fulfilled prophecy is something that sets the Bible apart from every other religious book.”6

These other religious books as well as other worldviews such as communism are not authoritative truth like the Bible but the opinions of very fallible men. Men’s opinions are just that, conclusions based on what’s popular, feelings, faulty reasoning, and wishful thinking. These opinions are totally useless when it comes to questions like where did we come from and what happens to us at death. In these cases, only a transcendent supernatural source of truth, like the Bible, can give us these answers.

My friends without the proper worldview there can be little hope in finding deep meaning in life. Fortunately for us the Christian worldview is based on absolute, authoritative, and divine truth that promises us a rich and rewarding life now and a bright eternal future. And remember while worldviews come and go, Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever!

  1. Great post, Curt. No other book has the credibility and track record of our Bible. Any worldview or opinion that does not include the Scriptures will always fall short of the only true perspective that matters – God’s.
