Usually when we hear the term masterpiece we think of some great work of art. But have you ever considered that when God made you, He created a unique masterpiece far more special and valuable than any treasured and priceless painting. If God can change caterpillars into butterflies, sand into pearls and coal into diamonds just think of the awesome transformation that took place in the nine short months you spent in your mother’s womb.
While changing a lowly caterpillar into a beautiful butterfly is a marvel of nature, it pales in comparison to what God has done in changing you from that original single cell at conception called, “You,” into a 30 trillion cell human being at birth. Let’s travel together for a few moments into discovering the greatest masterpiece God ever created – “You.”
According to Darwinian evolution your pathway to existence was based on the collision of mindless molecules that somehow miraculously, over several billion years, took dead inanimate matter and transformed it from amoeba to mammal, to man. Thus, mindless matter was somehow endowed with the ability to create, without any intelligence, the most complex entity in the universe, outside of God, mankind. My friends this fantastic creation story is the stuff that rocks dream about!
But according to Scripture you are far more than just mindless molecules – you have a soul and the ability to get to know your Creator. And I can’t think of a more awesome use of your 30 trillion cells, the ultimate masterpiece of engineering genius, than together as one, to glorify the One who made us, through our worship, praise, and adoration!
Throughout the Bible we see this theme of how our heavenly Father has crafted us into His unique masterpieces on purpose and for a purpose. Just take a look at the following verses to see just how divinely awesome you are:
(Ephesians 2:10, NLT): “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.”
(1 Peter 2:9): “But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.”
(Psalm 139:14): “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”
(1 John 3:1): “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!”
(Ephesians 1:5): “He predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will.”
The Holy Scriptures clearly present us with another explanation of ourselves. In contrast to the Darwinian evolutionary model we are told that God Himself made us, and that we are fearfully and wonderfully made. God did such a fabulous job in creating us that when we view ourselves as God sees us we will come away with a new appreciation of just how extraordinary a masterpiece we really are.
And as masterpieces created in the image of God we have the ultimate privilege to spend eternity in the presence of our Lord and Savior – Jesus Christ! That’s the wonderful hope for all who call on the name of Jesus through faith.
Sadly, for those who have embraced Darwinian evolution there is no hope in an afterlife. Instead their journey is from amoeba, to mammal, to man, to manure!
In stark contrast to this dismal evolutionary scenario the Christian can rejoice in knowing that he is a treasured possession to the Lord (Deuteronomy 14:2), created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27), joint heirs with Christ (Romans 8:16-17), that we are the temple of God (1 Corinthians 3:16), and that we are chosen, royal, holy, and special (1 Peter 2:9)! In short God loves us so much that He made us a one-of-a-kind masterpiece.
I thank my heavenly Father that He, one day, opened my blind eyes to allow me, an atheist and a sinner, to see that I indeed am a masterpiece created in His image to do good works here on earth, and to worship and enjoy Him forever!
