Having goals in our lives are essential if we are to maximize our outreach to a world that is desperately searching for meaning and purpose. As a Christian, we alone, have the answers to man’s desperate search for why he was created in the first place, as well as what happens to each of us after we leave planet earth.
As I was thinking about what should the ultimate goal be for the believer in Christ, I came across this wonderful quote from Paul Washer: “The goal of the Christian life is the pursuit of an intimate knowledge of God that leads to a greater estimation of His worth, a greater satisfaction and joy in His person, and a greater giving of oneself for His glory.”1
While I think all Christians can agree that one of the main goals, as a follower of Christ, should be to pursue a more intimate knowledge of God, I love the three things Washer says this leads to:
A greater estimation of His worth
When we focus on just how worthy Jesus is this will lead to a more healthy and greater desire to worship the Lord in beauty and truth, as well as elevate His name above every other name in all the universe. Understanding who Jesus really is, I believe, will revolutionize our worship and deepen our love for the Savior.
A greater satisfaction and joy in His person
Sadly, many Christians fail to experience the amazing contentment and awesome joy that an intimate relationship with Jesus can yield. My friends, what can be more satisfying and joyful than knowing the God who created you, understanding that God loves you so much that He died for you, and having the rock-solid assurance that God promises to be with you and supply all your needs for all eternity. And intimacy with Jesus also leads to this third most glorious privilege:
A greater giving of oneself for His glory
There is absolutely nothing more wonderful than to empty ourselves so we can be filled with Christ and then be used to glorify His name. And just how can we glorify Jesus: Well, we can share the good news of His Gospel, we can go to church and worship Him, we can give to the needy, we can pray for our friends and our enemies, and we can spend all of our waking hours in a state of perpetual praise to our Lord!
And when we do these three things the result will be that our lives will be utterly transformed and we will be able to bask in the ultimate privilege of spending our lives in intimacy with Jesus – and what can be more awesome than this!
