Before I became a Christian I thought that meaning could be found in obtaining things and meeting goals. I believed that pursuing business success, accumulating wealth, finding my soulmate, and doing good to others would bring me happiness and thus give me the meaning I was looking for in life. Sadly, despite achieving some of these goals there still remained a deep void inside of me that these accomplishments just did not fill.
You see the one thing that many people miss out on is the fact that the key to meaning in life is not based on things but on a person – Jesus Christ. Now don’t get me wrong relationships with people are important but until we bond with Jesus we miss out on why we were created in the first place. I really like what Ray Comfort shared on this point: “A man has missed the whole meaning of life if he has not entered into an active, living relationship with God through Christ.”1
We were created to have fellowship with God, to glorify His name, and to share this wonderful experience with others. Blaise Pascal, the great French mathematician and philosopher, once said that every man is born with a spiritual vacuum which only Jesus Christ can fill. So, our life here on earth will only find true satisfaction when we are in relationship with our Maker – Jesus.
Every human being goes through the same life cycle: we are born, we live, and we die. Throughout the centuries all of mankind has pondered the three big questions that correspond with these time periods of the human life cycle: How did we get here, what is the purpose of life, and where do we go when we die.
And it is this second question, what is the purpose of life that sadly, many people never find a satisfactory answer to. In (Ecclesiastes 12:13) King Solomon gives us great insight on the meaning of life when he said: “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God and keep His commandments, For this is man’s all.” For when we reverence God and obey His commandments life becomes one great adventure that provides us with the opportunity to get to know Jesus intimately, and that my friends is why we were created – to have a deep and personal relationship with our Creator, both now and for eternity!
My friends, don’t miss the meaning of life. Let Jesus fill your heart to overflowing and watch how life becomes rich, full, and wonderfully meaningful!
