How Close Are You to God?

As New Testament believers in Christ we are given the awesome privilege to know Jesus in a deep and intimate way. I love what we read in (James 4:8): “Come close to God and He will come close to you…” Did you ever realize that one of the main reasons God created you was so that He could have a relationship with you. God’s love for us is so amazing that I believe one of the greatest joys the Lord gets is when we draw close to Him in intimate fellowship. And the most exciting thing about this relationship is that as Christians it never has to end!

Sadly, many Christians are so busy with their own lives that they spend little time alone with the Lord. Back on August 1, 2023, I posted a devotion called The Inner Chamber. In it I strongly urged us to develop a set period each day to spend alone with the Lord. In fact, I strongly believe that this time alone with God is essential if you want to get to know Jesus better and to obtain guidance for each day and power for ministry.

Pastor Rick Warren shares perhaps the most exciting thing about our relationship with the Lord when he states: “The truth is — you are as close to God as you choose to be.”1 The truth is each day we have the opportunity to spend as much time as we desire with our Lord. Imagine the Creator of the universe is willing to spend quality time alone with us in intimate fellowship.

As I have shared in several past devotions the key to making every aspect of our Christian walk special is to learn the secret of transforming our walk with Jesus from duty to delight! And one of the main ways to do this is to talk with Jesus and ask Him to make (Psalm 37:4) the theme of you heart. This wonderful verse says: “Delight yourself in the Lord; And He will give you the desires of your heart.” And what is so exciting about this verse is that when we delight in Jesus, He will make His desires our desires. So, the next time you pick up your Bible or you talk to the Lord in prayer get excited for you are entering into the most important part of your day – time alone with Jesus.

Also, if reading the Bible is not getting you more excited than some of your other activities, may I challenge you to read (Psalm 119) several times to see how the psalmist developed a love affair with the Scriptures.

In closing, if you say you are too busy to find and spend quality time alone with the Lord, then quite frankly, you are too busy and need to re-prioritize your day. Every day Jesus is waiting to spend quality time alone with you. The question is are you willing to spend quality time alone with Him?
