John Wesley – Classic Quotations

John Wesley (1703 – 1791) was one of the most famous Christians of the past 500 years. He was an Anglican clergyman, evangelist and cofounder of Methodism. A graduate of the University of Oxford he became a priest in the Church of England in 1728.

Not only was Wesley a brilliant scholar but he was a great church organizer. But perhaps he is best known as an outdoor evangelist. During the 1700’s when the three main modes of land travel were walking, horseback, and carriage Wesley rode more than 4,000 miles a year preaching the gospel. During his amazing career Wesley rode over 250,000 miles and preached 40,000 sermons. Even at the advanced age of 88 he was still preaching. He gave his last sermon only a few days before his death in 1791.

Below are some of his most famous quotes that I pray will inspire you to draw closer to Jesus.1

“Whosoever will reign with Christ in heaven, must have Christ reigning in him on earth.”

“The church changes the world not by making converts but by making disciples.”

“Give me one hundred preachers who fear nothing but sin and desire nothing but God, and I care not whether they be clergymen or laymen, they alone will shake the gates of Hell and set up the kingdom of Heaven upon Earth.”

“Get on fire for God and men will come and see you burn.”

“Proceed with much prayer, and your way will be made plain.”

“I want the whole Christ for my Savior, the whole Bible for my book, the whole Church for my fellowship, and the whole world for my mission field.”

“I have so much to do that I spend several hours in prayer before I am able to do it.”

“Not, how much of my money will I give to God, but, how much of God’s money will I keep for myself?”

“Do no harm. Do good. Stay in love with God.”

“The neglect of prayer is a grand hindrance to holiness.”

“Do you not know that God entrusted you with that money (all above what buys necessities for your families) to feed the hungry, to clothe the naked, to help the stranger, the widow, the fatherless; and, indeed, as far as it will go, to relieve the wants of all mankind? How can you, how dare you, defraud the Lord, by applying it to any other purpose?”

“Nothing short of God can satisfy your soul.”

“Prayer is where the action is.”

“For as long as love takes up the whole heart, what room is there for sin therein?”

“Untold millions are still untold.”

“The readiest way to escape from our sufferings is, to be willing they should endure as long as God pleases.”

“This Book had to be written by one of three people: good men, bad men or God. It couldn’t have been written by good men because they said it was inspired by the revelation of God. Good men don’t lie and deceive. It couldn’t have been written by bad men because bad men would not write something that would condemn themselves. It leaves only one conclusion. It was given by divine inspiration of God.”

“Nay, if there be any mistakes in the Bible, there may as well be a thousand. If there be one falsehood in that book, it did not come from the God of truth.”

“Before I can preach love, mercy, and grace, I must preach sin, Law, and judgment. Preach 90% Law and 10% grace.”
