In the eyes of most, greatness is synonymous with accomplishing major achievements, accumulating large amounts of wealth, and becoming famous. But when we measure greatness in the economy of God the above things don’t impress God very much. Instead, there are two words that God uses to measure greatness, and they are faithfulness and obedience.
You see no matter what your station in life is and no matter what gifts and talents you may possess, God considers you great in His kingdom if you are faithful to the calling God has on your life and obedient to His will.
On the theme of faithfulness Amy Carmichael wonderfully tells us: “There have been times of late when I have had to hold on to one text with all my might: ‘It is required in stewards that a man may be found faithful.’ Praise God, it does not say ‘successful.’”1 And William Temple adds: “Little things are little things; but faithfulness in little things is a very great thing.”2
And when it comes to being obedient to God it is so encouraging to know that we can choose to obey Him and enjoy His approval no matter what our lot in life may be. For God honors and blesses the obedient servant. Just listen to the words in (II Chronicles 16:9): “For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him…” God loves obedience or loyalty to His Word and will. And according to Pastor John Stott: “Greatness in the kingdom of God is measured in terms of obedience.”3
Thus, if you strive to be great in the eyes of the Lord don’t measure greatness by the size of your bank account but look at the size of your heart and if it is consumed with advancing the kingdom of God and bringing Him glory. If that’s your desire be prepared to be richly blessed by the Lord!
