Quotes by Charles Spurgeon – Part IV

Back in October 2021, March 2022, and July 2022 I shared a series of quotes by the great Baptist preacher, Charles Spurgeon. As I shared in my October 2021 devotion: “For a man, who suffered from so much depression, it is absolutely awe-inspiring that he is so often quoted for his uplifting words of hope and wisdom.” Please take time to meditate on each quote below – I guarantee you will be blessed.1

“If God calls you to be a minister, don’t stoop to becoming a king.”

“Sorrow for sin should be the keenest sorrow; joy in the Lord should be the loftiest joy.”

“We may be certain that whatever God has made prominent in His Word, He intended to be conspicuous in our lives.”

“I would to God that saints would cling to Christ half as earnestly as sinners cling to the devil. If we were as willing to suffer for God as some are to suffer for their lusts, what perseverance and zeal would be seen on all sides!”

“Don’t go where it is all fine music and grand talk and beautiful architecture; those things will neither fill anybody’s stomach, nor feed his soul. Go where the gospel is preached, the gospel that really feeds your soul, and go often.”

“If we empty our hearts of self God will fill them with His love.”

“All our perils are nothing, so long as we have prayer.”

“The boundless stores of Providence are engaged for the support of the believer.”

“The world’s one and only remedy is the cross.”

“Prayer must not be our chance work but our daily business, our habit and vocation.”

“I am certain that I never did grow in grace one-half so much anywhere as I have upon the bed of pain.”

“If there be a man before me who says that the wrath of God is too heavy a punishment for his little sin, I ask him, if the sin be little, why does he not give it up?”

“If there be any one point in which the Christian church ought to keep its fervor at a white heat, it is concerning missions. If there be anything about which we cannot tolerate lukewarmness, it is the matter of sending the gospel to a dying world.”

“Another proof of the conquest of a soul for Christ will be found in a real change of life. If the man does not live differently from what he did before, both at home and abroad, his repentance needs to be repented of and his conversion is a fiction.”

“The full he empties, and the empty he fills.”

“We declare, upon Scriptural authority, that the human will is so desperately set on mischief, so depraved, and so inclined to everything that is evil, and so disinclined to everything that is good, that without the powerful, supernatural, irresistible influence of the Holy Spirit, no human will ever be constrained towards Christ.”

“He that knows how to overcome the Lord in prayer, has heaven and earth at his disposal.”

“To be a soul winner is the happiest thing in the world. And with every soul you bring to Jesus Christ, you seem to get a new heaven here upon earth.”

“Prayer is the best response to hatred.”

“Affliction is the best book in a minister’s library.”

“Not that our salvation should be the effect of our work, but our work should be the evidence of our salvation.”

“We know so little about the future that to worry about it would be the height of foolishness.”

“Saints are described as fearing the name of God; they are reverent worshippers; they stand in awe of the Lord’s authority; they are afraid of offending Him; they feel their own nothingness in the sight of the Infinite One.”

“If we will only think, we shall begin to thank.”

“Praise is the beauty of a Christian. What wings are to a bird, what fruit is to the tree, what the rose is to the thorn, that is praise to a child of God.”

“Every generation needs regeneration.”

“Let your thoughts be psalms, your prayers incense, and your breath praise.”

“The more holy, the more humble.”

“We are not called to proclaim philosophy and metaphysics, but the simple gospel. Man’s fall, his need of a new birth, forgiveness through atonement, and salvation as the result of faith, these are our battle-ax and weapons of war.”
