Quotes by Charles Spurgeon – Part V

snow covered mountain during sunrise

This devotion is my fifth in a series of quotes by the great Baptist preacher, Charles Spurgeon. As I shared in my October 2021 devotion: “For a man, who suffered from so much depression, it is absolutely awe-inspiring that he is so often quoted for his uplifting words of hope and wisdom.” Please take time to meditate on each quote below – I guarantee you will be blessed.1

“This is the sum; my brethren, preach Christ, always and evermore. He is the whole gospel. His person, offices, and work must be our one great all-comprehending theme.”

“Saints of the early church reaped great harvests in the field of prayer and found the mercy seat to be a mine of untold treasures.”

“We shall not adjust our Bible to the age; but before we have done with it, by God’s grace, we shall adjust the age to the Bible.”

“A holy life is in itself a wonderful power, and will make up for many deficiencies; it is in fact the best sermon a man can ever deliver.”

“Oh, for five hundred Elijah’s, each one upon his Carmel , crying unto God, and we should soon have the clouds bursting into showers. Oh, for more prayer, more constant, incessant prayer! Then the blessing would rain upon us.”

“Above all I commend the study of Christ. Let Him be your library.”

“You cannot have Christ, if you will not serve Him.”

“Some people like to read so many [Bible] chapters every day. I would not dissuade them from the practice, but I would rather lay my soul a soak in half a dozen verses all day than rinse my hand in several chapters. Oh, to be bathed in a text of Scripture, and to let it be sucked up in your very soul, till it saturates your heart!”

“Come boldly, O believer, for despite the whisperings of Satan and the doubting’s of thine own heart, thou art greatly beloved.”

“Even if I give the whole of my worth to Him, He will find a way to give back to me much more than I gave.”

“You are saved – seek to be like your Savior.”

“Intercessory prayer is exceedingly prevalent. What wonders it has wrought! The Word of God teems with its marvelous deeds. Believer, thou hast a mighty engine in thy hand, use it well, use it constantly, use it with faith, and thou shalt surely be a benefactor to thy brethren.”

“The Christian’s life should be one of thankfulness to God.”

“Suffering times are a Christian’s harvest time.”

“You and your sins must separate or you and your God will never come together.”

“A Christian man should so shine in his life, that a person could not live with him a week without knowing the gospel.”

“The furnace of affliction is a good place for you, Christian; it benefits you; it helps you to become more like Christ, and it is fitting you for heaven.”

“We must trust as if it all depended on God and work as if it all depended on us.”

“A man who fears not God, will break all his laws with an easy conscience, but one who is the favorite of heaven, who has been indulged to sit at royal banquets, who knows the eternal love of God to him, cannot bear that there should be any evil way in him that might grieve the Spirit and bring dishonor to the name of Christ. A very little sin, as the world calls it, is a very great sin to a truly awakened Christian.”

“There is nothing little in God; His mercy is like Himself – it is infinite. You cannot measure it. His mercy is so great that it forgives great sins to great sinners, after great lengths of time, and then gives great favours and great privileges, and raises us up to great enjoyments in the great heaven of the great God.”

“Infinite, and an infant. Eternal, and yet born of a woman. Almighty, and yet hanging on a woman’s breast. Supporting a universe, and yet needing to be carried in a mother’s arms. King of angels, and yet the reputed son of Joseph. Heir of all things, and yet the carpenter’s despised son.”

“If I had my choice of all the blessings I can conceive of I would choose perfect conformity to the Lord Jesus, or, in one word, holiness.”

“All places are places of worship to a Christian. Wherever he is, he ought to be in a worshiping frame of mind.”

“True humility is a flower which will adorn any garden.”

“There should be a parallel between our supplications and our thanksgivings. We ought not to leap in prayer, and limp in praise.”

“If I had never joined a church till I had found one that was perfect, I should never have joined one at all; and the moment I did join it, if I had found one, I should have spoiled it, for it would not have been a perfect church after I had become a member of it. Still, imperfect as it is, it is the dearest place on earth to us.”

“If God has fit you to be a missionary, I would not have you shrivel down to be a king.”

“Free grace can go into the gutter, and bring up a jewel!”
