Scripture – Our Divine Standard

One of the greatest gifts that God has given to mankind is the Holy Bible. Not only is the Bible a book that reveals that we are sinful and lost souls, but it presents us with the way of salvation through Jesus Christ, the God of the universe. Not only does the Bible reveal the character of God, that He is all loving and holy, but it shows us how we are to live in a world full of sin. While natural revelation, the world we live in, lets us know that there is a God, only the Holy Scriptures, special revelation, reveals just who this God is and how we are to live.

Without the Bible we would have no divine standard to aid us in our quest to live holy lives. Without the Scriptures we wouldn’t be able to know how to please Jesus. And without the Bible we wouldn’t be able to distinguish absolute truth from relative truth.

The Holy Scriptures present us with the truth of what is absolute right verses wrong, guide us on how to live holy lives, reveal God’s will for our lives, and are what I like to call our basic instructions before leaving earth. In our world, where there are so many different religions, philosophies, and value systems, only the Holy Scriptures present us with the one true and perfect way to live. All other belief systems are imperfect, and will never lead us to the one true God, Jesus Christ, and His one divine standard for living – the Bible.

My friends, the exciting thing about the Word of God is that not only does it tell us who God is, but it tells us how to live holy lives, how to know right from wrong, and most importantly how to glorify Jesus and enjoy Him forever. A thorough knowledge of the Bible is our only divine standard, providing us with everything we need, to make right decisions in life. I really like what J. C. Ryle shares on this point: “Holiness is the habit of being of one mind with God, according as we find His mind described in Scripture. It is the habit of agreeing in God’s judgment, hating what He hates, loving what He loves, and measuring everything in this world by the standard of His Word.”1

We are fallible human beings, but praise God, we have been given an infallible book to guide on our journey through life. So, I implore you to treasure your Bible – it will never let you down and always guide you into perfect truth!
