Seven Interesting and Fun Facts About the Bible

The Bible is the most amazing, influential, unique, and transformational book ever written. There are so many ways to talk about the Bible and plumb the depths of its divine wisdom that no wonder it is the best-selling book of all time. I thought it would be fun to share seven interesting facts about the Holy Scriptures that you might not be completely aware. So here we go:

The world’s smallest Bible (1)

Did you know that the world’s smallest Bible is the Nano Bible. It is so small that it would easily fit on the tip of a ballpoint pen since it is only 20 nanometers big. In order to read the text, it is necessary to use a microscope with a magnification of at least 10,000 times.

The “Wicked” Bible once promoted adultery (2)

Published in 1631, the so called “Wicked” or “Sinner’s” Bible, because of a typographical error, stated that “thou shalt commit adultery,” instead of “thou shalt not commit adultery.” Because of this error in (Exodus 20:14), of the King James Version of the Bible, the printers were fined 300 English pounds.

The Bible is the only book with an entire section devoted to it (3)

The Bible is the only book you will find with a whole section devoted to it in a bookstore (whether Christian or secular) – not a section devoted to books about the subject – The Bible – but to the Bible itself! There are so many different translations (King James Version, New American Standard, New International Version, The Amplified Bible, The Message, The Living Bible, etc.), sizes (the entire Bible, The New Testament, pocket editions, large-print editions), and materials (hardcover, paperback, leather bound) that in many of the larger bookstores an entire section is reserved for this one very special book.

The origin of the Red-Letter Bible (4)

The first red-letter Bible showing the words of Jesus in red ink was published in 1899 (the New Testament only) with the entire Bible two years later. The idea of printing the words of Christ in red originated with Louis Klopsch, the German-American editor of Christian Herald magazine. Klopsch got the idea of printing Jesus’ words in red, the color of His blood, after reading (Luke 22:20) – “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.”

Methuselah is the oldest person in the Bible. (5)

Methuselah lived to the ripe old age of 969. (Genesis 5:27). In addition, six other people lived to over 900 years old. Adam – 930 years old (Genesis 5:5), Seth – 912 years old (Genesis 5:8), Enosh – 905 years old (Genesis 5:11), Kenan – 910 years old (Genesis 5:14), Jared – 962 years old (Genesis 5:20), Noah – 950 years old (Genesis 9:29).

Were there really three wise men? (7)

It goes without saying, but almost everyone when talking about the wise men or “the Magi,” assume that there were three of them. These enigmatic Magi only appear at the nativity scene in Matthew chapter 2. Church tradition assumes that they were three kings named Melchior, Caspar and Balthazar. However, the Scriptures never refer to their names nor how many wise men actually visited the baby Jesus. The assumption is since three gifts were presented to Jesus that there must have been three wise men. The actual number could have been much more. The important thing to remember is that we must be careful to put tradition on the same level as Scripture.
