We rarely think of a possession that is worn out or falling apart as a good thing. However, in the case of the Scriptures, owning a Bible that is falling apart because of use is an exception to this rule. I like how Adrian Rogers puts it: “If you have a Bible that’s falling apart, you’ll have a life that’s not.”1
My friends a person who loves reading their Bible each day, who constantly is going back and forth from book to book or from Old to New Testament, and who underlines and adds comments throughout its pages can’t help but see, over the years, a deterioration in this most cherished of possessions. But while our Bible may be falling apart rest assure our lives will flourish!
Below are just three reasons why I can confidently make this claim:
Owning a Bible that’s falling apart will saturate you with a steady diet of truth
One of the main reasons many people lead lives of despair and sadness is that they buy the lies of our arch enemy – Satan. When we listen to Satan and his deceptions we are either believing in outright lies or relative truths that are in reality not real biblical truths. As a result, we can never find real joy and peace in life because only when we are traveling on the road of real absolute truth, as contained in the Bible can we be free to experience the joys of life. For we read in (John 8:31-32): “To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, ‘If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.’” God’s Word is trustworthy and perfect truth for every situation in life. Knowing Scripture and abiding in God’s Word is guaranteed to provide you with the truth you need to handle all the issues of life – and as an overcomer!
Owning a Bible that’s falling apart will assure you of an intimate relationship with the Creator of the universe!
As you consistently read, study, and meditate on God’s Word get excited because the more you fall in love with the Scriptures the more you will fall in love with Jesus – the Creator of the universe. Imagine as you read the Bible and glean its truths you will automatically begin to learn to spend more time in prayer, meditation, and enter into a more intimate relationship with Jesus. And I can’t think of anything more soul satisfying than to spend quality time in the presence of the Lord – who loved you so much that He died so you could enter into this very special relationship!
Owning a Bible that’s falling apart will fill you with the right attitude to face even the most difficult of trials
I know in my own life that trials are part of life, even as a Christian. But getting lost in the pages of Scripture through constant delving into the deeper waters of the Word has truly transformed my attitude to one of positivity, gratitude, and eternal optimism. In fact, even when life throws me a curveball, I begin to look for the blessing in the trial, knowing that God works all things for ultimate good (Romans 8:28). One of the great things I have learned from my study of Scripture is that trials are in reality great opportunities for God to use them for His glory. And in addition, God will use me, if I am willing, to be the vessel that brings glory to God in the long run.
So, if you own a Bible that’s falling apart, get excited because first, you will be exposed to absolute truth; which will truly make you free! Second, you will enter into the most wonderful relationship in the universe – an intimate relationship with your Creator – Jesus Christ. And third, watch your attitude soar to one of great positivity and gratitude – which translates into joy unspeakable and full of glory!
